Introduction

There is a choice before – whether we want to make a great organization or a mediocre organization. Mediocre organizations are easier to make – any person can make it. We have to choose – whether we realy want to make a great organization or not - - because it is not a simple task.

Great organizations require great peopoe. It requires greater systems, processes, culture and organizational structures. It is not easy to create. You can make mediocre organization – copy other organizations, and you can create them. Great organizations require pain.

Let us understand what will constitute a great organization. It is important to understand the process of great organization, so that we can create and transform an organization to geatness. Since it is a very difficult task to create a great organization, it is even more difficult task to sustain at that level.

Organizations consists of people with certain belief system, processes and structures. The processes, systems and structure of the organizations differentiate the organization from other organizations. The better these processes, the better will be the organization.

Steps:

The first process in the organization is recruitment – where we take people in our organization and structure a relationship among people Subsequently, we have to put systems in place, which can define the type of relationship between people. We have to select those people, who realy understand what we want. We have to take people who can internalize our vision, mission, values and who can create unison that will make the organization look like a team.

People may be different in terms of their background, ideas, education, training etc. but they should have the capability and willingness to create a fusion. A fusion, which can make them a part of a larger fabric – called organization.

Organization has certain processes – like communication process, leadership process, motivation process etc. these processes make organization distinctive and outperforming. Let us focus on each of these proceses and try to make this process great so that we can achieve our purpose. These processes are :

Communication process: let us improve the quality of communication process. In order to improve communication process, we have to create an environment of trust, support, mutual guidance, openness, transparency, sharing, mutual respect and common ideal, vaulues, mission and purpose. The root of the word communication is common – thus communication will improve if we are able to create more and more commonness among people. The more the common-ness the better will be the performance. Quality of communication depends on our ability to understand and reciprocate to each other.

Motiation process: motivation refers to the extent to which we are able to motivate each other, create incentive for excellence, and create superorgdinate goals. It depends on encouragement to excellence and support to excellence. It is not individual – but the excellence that should be important in all our dealings in the organization. We have to create a system – where we nurture excellence. We have to enable people to set benchmarks and achieve excellence.

Leadership process: the extent to which we are able to influence each other. In great organizations, people influence each other. They are connected to each other. They have great power over each other. People care for each other, respect each other and are influenced by each other. Ordinary people will become extraordinary when they join great organizations. Extraordinary people will become mediocre, if they join mediocre organizations. In order to establish great leadership, we have to create an environment of mutual connectivity, cohesion, informal interaction, good human relations and mutual support and influence. We have to create clariy regarding goals and concern for people in order to create an environment of leadership. Each of the employee should be encouraged to become leader. We don’t have to create followers, but true leaders – those who are able to influence each other – impact each others and are true impact making.

Types of organizational excellence: We can find various types of excellence in organizations. We can find missionary exceelence in organizations like brahma kumaris, we can find professional excellence in organizations like McKinsey. Similarly, we can find great learning organizations in the form of IITs and IIMs. We can also come across transformational. Ultimately organization have influence on society. Organizations are building blocks of society. Great organizations help us in transforming society. Great organizations crate values, which percolate down to socieity and help us in shaping social values.

Different organizations have different values and aspirations, which enable them to transform a part of society with those set of values. Organisations ultimately

Dear Dr. Jain,

Thank u VERY MUCH for THE GREAT IDEA. Kindly read this long open mail to you below.

I am new to SiliconIndia and understand it is one of the top professional online communities of Indians. I feel that this special group with higher education, experience in various fields and exposure to the modern world can do great things. To me India is the country with priceless heritage and endless diversity. India is also the country with the largest number of highly qualified and experienced personnel in the world. India is probably the most complex country in the world and is struggling with slow development, while a much faster pace is possible. From my 30 years overseas life and observations, I believe that for about 95% of the problems in the world there are many solutions. But the solutions are not on all the spots where the problems are; therefore, many problems remain unresolved.

I am sure that if about 100 professionals of SiliconIndia community join hands with determination, a small but important move can be made to introduce – just introduce – world’s most efficient development process to a few towns and villages in at least one state of India. Then it is up to them to recognise and utilise the process for the FAST DEVELOPMENT of that town or village; the conviction and initiative must come from them. We cannot do more like donate funds for projects etc, because not only it will not help the town or village much, but it will harm them by generating passivity, corruption etc. I believe that many of the central gov’t’s development schemes are causing this. The local authorities, politicians etc do not realise these funds as their own tax money, but consider these as easy money to enrich themselves. My idea is to induce a town or village to copy the Porto Alegre process to establish a tangible fast development model from their own efforts and resources.

Incidentally I recognised ‘Porto Alegre Innovation’ in Participatory Budgeting (PB) as world’s most efficient and democratic process for FAST socio-economic development. Porto Alegre is the capital of the Brazilian state Rio Grande de Sul. It proved that FAST development is not difficult. The only thing needed for India’s fast development is to persuade some towns and villages in India to copy it. Copying is the easiest, quickest, most economical and a very efficient way of doing things. Computers, cars, Jumbo-jets and even human beings are copies. But a copy can be better than the original or worse. Professionals know from experience that the causes of a problem are hidden in details (‘devil in details’); the ‘angels of success’ are also hidden in details. Two points are decisive in copying; first one is, important elements should not be dropped out or lost, and secondly, essential adaptations should be made to make it feasible in a new situation. Because of various reasons, most politicians are unable to take the initiative to introduce this process to establish a tangible model of fast development within the reach of the common man. Without a tangible model within one’s reach, most people including experts will find it difficult to understand it and its potential. Politicians and experts will dispute and discuss endlessly on the type of model.

I have put a few blogs herein with the details of the Porto Alegre Innovation hoping that professionals with some socio-economic background will read it; but it seems no one interested has seen it or just ‘surfed’ it without grasping its great potential. I request you to review it and if you feel agreeable to the ideas, please join the Great India 2025 group herein. Please make your suggestions and critiques as well. The group will only undertake an information campaign, so that some village(s) or town(s) with honest and capable leadership will come forward to adapt the process and set an example. When one model is there, people will start asking, as happened in Porto Alegre, why not in my village/town?, and a chain reaction will follow. For India to be a developed country by 2040 it needs one Porto Alegre model in each district by 2015. Please visit www.karammel.com.

Thanking you in anticipation of your serious consideration and participation,
AK
