Aftermath Of Bhopal Gas Tragedy ---- A Shameful Example Set By IIT Alumni At The US

The Western Influence Showing On As IIT Alumni In The US Decides To Take Dow Chemicals As Sponsors For Their 50th Alumni Meet At The US

EmPower Research Knowledge Services, By Arunava Das (Media Analyst)

July 15, 2008

(In response to an article, “IITians say no to Dow” published in Silicon India on July 15, 2008)

It is really a shameful act of blemishes committed by a host of IIT’ians at the US to invite Dow Chemicals as sponsors for their upcoming 50th Alumni Meet in the country. As far as I know and everybody will agree that to get into any one of the IIT is a big ask which requires umpteen dedication towards studies and those who eventually get into are considered the gems of the country. As gems of the country, we have responsibilities on our shoulders, we Indians rest our hopes on them that they graduate with flying colors and bring name and fame to the country. India shines with them. India’s economy grows with them as she finds a place in the global economy chart. No doubt the past decade has seen a real bloom in Indian economy and will continue to bloom this way as it heads towards the future. We are one of the few countries with China who has the youngest pool source of youth who are considered to contribute big time to the country’s growth, be it economy, politics, industry, finance, revenue, foreign trade, healthcare sector, hospitality sector or retail sector. Hence, as responsible citizens of India, we need to refrain from acts that can harm the Indian policy and the fame that India is a proud owner of.

United Carbide is one such company that will remain etched in the history books as being responsible for one of the worst industrial tragedies of all time, The Bhopal Gas Tragedy that took place on the fateful night of December 3, 1984 that left 3800 people dead and thousand affected of the gas leak. Many are suffering still now and many have not even got justice till date. The Dow Chemicals now owns Union Carbide. Under such circumstances, when IITians in India have already rejected either campus recruitment or call for sponsors from Dow Chemicals, the India based IITians would have expected their states based counterparts to also follow the suit but instead they were in with a sudden shock and surprise as they discovered that their counterparts in the US have infact endorsed Dow Chemicals as the sponsors of their 50th Alumni Meet Golden Jubilee function which will be organized under the aegis of IIT-Bombay Heritage Fund in New York between July 18-20. This shows that once we leave our motherland for a career in the western world, we also leave behind our cultural heritage in India. According to a Mumbai based IIT-Bombay alumni, Mr. Janak Daftari, a group of IIT-B alumni, mostly from Silicon Valley, in total disregard to the sentiments and the callous practices being followed by the firm (Dow Chemicals) in their (alumini's) origin country, has gone ahead and under the aegis of IIT-Bombay Heritage Fund are organizing a two-day golden jubilee function in New York between July 18-20. Following this incident, many IIT alumni including faculty and current students in India have decided to boycott the grand event. Another Delhi based IITian, Ravi Kuchimanchi, said, “In 1984 when the gas leaked in Bhopal, I and other students in IIT-Bombay were shocked and angry. Today I am shocked to see, instead of forcing Dow to fork up money and clean up the Bhopal site, the organisers of the 50th anniversary celebrations have sought its money. As IIT alumni we can do better.”

It needs to be seen now whether the event goes on smoothly and how many alumni attend the meet. According to ex IIT-B, Janak Daftari, "Obviously, the golden jubilee celebration is being done privately but then there is a tacit approval from the senior administrators. After all they are seriously contemplating to attend the event even though scores of faculty members have opposed the sponsorship itself.” However, it would be better as to see that such blemishes do not occur again as this tarnishes the global image of India and as the responsible gems of the country, we need to respect our identity.

Hi Arunava,

It's shameful to hear this that IIT Alumni has invited DOW chemicals as Sponser of 50th Alumni Meet At The US.

I belong to Bhopal and know how miserable is our life out here. We lost many of our family member's and some who were saved by God's grace are still suffering from diseases spread by the Chemical at DOW knows as Union Carbide at Bhopal.

We the people of BHOPAL are fighting for our justice & fighting for our rights to punish the owner of DOW Chemicals.

But look what the cream of our Indian Brains are doing, they even don't have this much moral responsibility of Being Indian not to take help from such CULPRITS.

Shame on them to get sponser's money they have lost their sense and moral awarenes.

Shame on such IIT'ians.

I applaud your sentiments. However, Union Carbide (the infamous industry---(believe it or not, I was offered a job and declined to) that caused misery and pain to our people, town and workers is not the worst industrial disaster due to compromised occupational health &safety/environmental oversight at the site. I have seen this in my career as the environmental/health/safety consultant both at the state government and industry sites in the US and India (off course!)that regulations are only written to justify government employment to create bureaucracies. The higher ups in management would see it as a thorn on their side as no one wants to see it get implemented. Legislators get involved only when a barking citizen that they cannot afford to keep silent for next election sounds off.

Even the nuclear safety professed by US is so faulty at the plant, waste storage, preparedness and enforcement that one will wonder, when does what is being conveyed to people equals what actually goes on? India has to go a long way. IITans seem to care for the next jump to house their best brains in these shops in US so why not be a slave to the system? Today's business environment has helped compromise wisdom and ethic in any part of the world. Bigger the country, bigger the employable malpractices, bigger the financial deal making at election time. If you think we buy elections in India, think again our lobbyists have pierced through every bone in the system that leaves an average American at work and in communities, now even in homes vulnerable to being swallowed by the system. You have to know more about other countries before we disown ours. Yes I have seen US govt. employees taking bribes and drawing up contracts with their friends/relatives businesses. RFP is a myth at times. Not all but a good percentage!

One thing you have to be proud that at least some staff and students at IIT were able to show their decent. However, in a clean (so called) US system, your decent will anger your bosses to catch up with you at the review time or even before that.

Just be thankful that India as corrupt system as it may be, cannot beat some of the bigger and admired countries for their hush hush dictatorship, power play to keep a lid on the affairs. At least you have a voice where you are, you will be silenced (conveniently, justifiably, and expeditiously), if you brought those legitimate reasons before your US bosses.

The spoken freedoms in west are only on the books and big money lawyering. Rest is a myth. Based on my case study, research and work experience at both places, I will say this to you............India is playing a game like others do, in poker thrust is on winning not how much you were under the "influence" (as in alcohol consumption) while you made your move!

When money exchanges hands, powers come to their knees, when power ceases in any operation, corruption infiltrates the minds. So Gandhi ji also knew how to play games at times when Churchill wanted to give a chill pill to his endeavors. Gandhi ji succeeded as he was a "situational thinker" who kept his mind on attaining his goal and dismissed his insults by responding in sarcasm and humor rather than in silence and freeze!

So chin up, we must make a note and remind our new leaders that people and people's condition matters when it comes to
being slave for hunted dollars from any country.
Good luck!

Thank you Sir for your valuable comments. That is why I stress the fact that we need to stay in India and start taking responsibilities. In Hindi, we say --- Sab politicians bik chuke hein. It is us who have to take the onus and work to free India from corruption. No doubt India is ranked 75 from bottom out of the 80 most corrupted countries of the world (the most corrupted lies at the bottom). The list was prepared by Forbes. Programmes like "Lead India" should happen again and again rather than stupidity of "Laughter Challenges". Its like we are laughing on our own condition!!! The whole country has got corrupted, right from top to bottom and at this stage the youth can save her. That was the main reason in writing the article and your valuable comments have really helped the cause.

What you will do Mr.Das when you have the likes of Chidhambaram, Kamalnath, Dr.Ahluwalia along with Ratan Tata who have written to thePM to waive the criminal liability of dow Chemical for the gas disaster so that they would make more investments in india. Any how I salute your social commitment as well those IIT grads who declined offer
