What is a vision?
A vision is a ‘big picture’ of a preferred future state. To be useful, a vision should have most, if not all, of the following characteristics:
Be concrete destination. A vision describes the future in concrete, specific images and desired results.
Have a clear destination. Most often, a vision paints a picture of specific end state or condition to be achieved.
Present a clear contrast between current conditions and the preferred future . A vision clearly articulates way things need to change and ways in which the future state will be preferable to the current situation.
Be medium to long term. A vision describes a future state – not next week or next quarter but the longer term.
Stretch people. A vision inspires people to stretch their abilities and reach higher levels of achievement.
Tie in with needs and desires of others. A vision inspires by inviting people to work toward things that are important to them and to the large society around them.
Be important to the leader. A vision derives from what a leader wants to achieve for the organization and its people.
Provide a sense of significance. A vision helps people understand the importance of the contribution of their part of the orgnisation and the people within it to the large orgnisation.
