Fault is with us Even!
If one were to ask us why we have been lagging behind in technical education,we are happy to pass the blame on our system and the bugs in it.But there are hardly a handful of people who go critically with the analysis.If one carries out such analysis,he would realise that the fault is with us even!
Agreed we lack infrastructure,qualified faculty and comprehensive educational policy .But the basic pitfall in this aspect is the quantitative attitude that majority of us posses.
Yes,we are habituated to measure the knowledge and skills of a person based on his academic score or his rank in a competitive exam.These have become the yardsticks for us to measure a persons abilities.Rather than posing this question to the society we must ask this question to our own self.How far would these depict the actual efficiency of a student?
Adding to the despair ,such analysis leads a student towards enormous stress and pressure and if he finds himself below the aspired rank or percentage,it evokes high levels of discontent and frustration in him.Such situations have destroyed the student hood of many youngsters.To the extreme end in this aspect,we have also witnessed such disappointed committing suicides.
On the other hand,it is unfair for us to make any assessments based on the mere three hour examinations.To prove themselves students are concentrating more on the aspect of scoring good marks rather than to learn the actual subject.For instance,in most of the exams,student is offered with choice say answer five out of eight.I don't intend to blame the pattern ,but this fact needs a probe.He would prepare in such a way that he can answer the five perfectly in the exam.So,finally he ends up covering only only seventy percent of the total syllabus.The other day I was shocked when I noticed that one of my learned friend was unable to distinguish between a coil and a solenoid.Utterly shocking is the fact that he is going to be awarded the degree of an electrical engineer next summer! But as per statistics he is a brilliant student.This is the lack of application that our yard stick measures can create.
Suggesting a solution is rather an impossible task,for a person of my stature atleast .But,I definitely feel that,evaluation scheme must be more comprehensive and should take into account depth in the subject, knowledge,application skills and finally his theoritical ability.Such a change would be almost a mirage in the current situation.Hence rather than seeking such an impossible change,we can help out ourselves by avoiding to pass comments based on the score of a student.This change in the psychology of us especially parents,would come as a huge relief to the stressed minds of the students.

Passing a comment or judgment is one thing and
evaluating a person on the basis of marks as a
prospective for a job is another. Most successful
companies have realised that the right way to
choose a candidate I mean a fresh entry is to
conduct their own aptitude or entrance
examination,with several rounds of selection and
base the primary selections on this exam. While it
is true that an examination is not necessarily a
best way to pick up talent, one is forced to find
a via media to choose from the available pool
employable candidates. Your advice is more
pertinent to parents,teachers and peers. To bring
out the best in the student there must be several
other outlets designed into the curriculum for
blooming of talent and recognition of inner
capacities. I think here is a wonderful subject to
blog on.
