Managerial skills

Today the role of a good manager plays a vital role in the development of any organization. A good manager works like a mentor in any organization. The role of mentor in every organization has been increasing .Mentor plays an important role in the development of any organization. Mentoring is a tool where the organization can nurture and develop to grow their people. It is an effective strategy which is helpful in building professional, technical and management skills and employee confidence through co-operative and collaborative effort. It can reduce the fear and anxiety of the employees and can develop a culture of high performance by ensuring support and their contribution. Mentoring can be an informal practice or a formal program. The main objective behind the mentoring program in industry is to focus on establishing a mutually beneficial relationship between management and workers to enhance an organization's ability to align employees' career development with the goals of the organization. There are certain assumptions that form the foundation for a solid mentoring program. They are as follows:

  • Intentional learning is a stone that forms the base of a corner of a building-The mentor's job is to promote deliberate learning, which includes capacity building through methods such as instructing, coaching, providing experiences, modeling and advising.
  • Both failure and success are powerful teachers- Mentors, as leaders of a learning experience, need to share their experiences of failure and success. Both types of experiences give valuable opportunities for analyzing individual and organizational realities.
  • Leader need to tell their stories-Mentors who can talk about themselves and their experiences establish a close and harmonious relationship in which there is a common understanding that makes them "learning leaders."
  • Timely ripe- When Mentoring works, it taps into continuous learning although is not a continuous event, or even a string of discrete events. Rather, it is the synthesis of ongoing events, experiences, observations, studies, and thoughtful analyses.
  • Mentoring is a joint venture-Successful mentoring means sharing responsibility for learning. Successful mentoring begins with setting a contract for learning around which the mentor, the protégé, and their respective line managers are aligned.

Managerial skills are not by birth. It can be achieved by using some practical experiment. Some of the people think that it can be achieved by only doing some management course. But apart from that if you see the profile of the people like Mahatma Gandhi, J. R. D. Tata, Dhiru Bhai Ambani and Dabba Wala etc. All the above persons have not any qualification related to management. They simply were using their practical experience to achieve their goal.

Mahatma Gandhi was famous for his leadership quality, a lone man who took the nation by surprise with his understanding the quality and the pulse of Indian people. He used truth and non-violence as his yardstick for his leadership. Under his leadership India became free from British rule.

J. R. D. Tata was famous for his innovative ideas. He applied his innovations in such a way so as to believe in himself and the nation which was thick with national talents and skills for future managers in different fields.

Dhiru Bhai Ambani has also not having any management qualification. But due his creative ideas and leadership quality he was succeed in establishing a big empire in co-operate world.

Daba Wala had initially started his business with home delivery system for working women. But later on he diversified his business by catering to office goers. Delivering on time and delivering the utensils back to the respective destination became widely accepted by one and all. His business was also viewed by Prince Charles as one of the most lucrative business and he was so enamored by him that he had invited his employees on his second marriage. He was also awarded six-sigma certificate.

Hence managerial skill is not generally occupied by doing some management course. It can be achieved by using some practical experiment or by using mental exercise. For developing managerial skills, mentor plays a vital role for grooming the skills. For grooming skills there is a mentoring program. Mentoring program is an effective process which is helpful in building qualified professional, various technical and management skills and developing employee confidence through co-operative and collaborative effort.
