It is not flesh and blood but the heart which makes us fathers and sons, brothers and sisters and we as a family are a strange little band of characters traipsing through life sharing illnesses and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that binds us all together. But no matter how well we play all the above and unmentioned parts of our life, we also tend to take our family for granted and lightly.

Today, as I was lazily surfing channels I saw the theatrical trailer of Sammir’s latest film Mukhbiir. Seeing him portraying such a complex character with immense ease made me swell with pride. However, what gave me the chills were his eyes. Oh, what ability they had! They could terrorise like a loaded and levelled gun. They could offend like hissing or kicking, or in their assorted mood, by beams of kindness, they could make the heart dance with joy.

Up until yesterday, this was a kid I have seen growing up before me, and now, in an instant, I see that he is all grown up! A fool I was because in always looking at the larger picture of taking care of him, I had forgotten to observe little things in him.

Sam, I’m not taking you any lightly, or granted for that matter any longer, my younger brother hehehehe!

After reading this post and the comments, I want to share about a childhood friend. I had a very close friend when I was in high school. She was always very simply dressed and wore boyish clothes. She did not exhibit any ‘style’ in dressing, talking or anything else which generally the high school girls and boys like to exhibit at that age. Very unassuming character, all I remember about her is playing cricket and talking about becoming a pilot. She went to a non-convent, Hindi medium school and was an average student. After high school, we went to different colleges and got busy in our own lives and we gradually lost touch with each other.
Fast forward to seventeen years later…
Last week I learnt that Sunita Sharma is Capt. Sunita Sharma now. She is not only a trained commercial pilot but also has been a flying instructor for the past fourteen years. At present she is working with King Fisher airlines.
My mind goes two decades back. The face of that plain Jane, thin, tom boyish girl flashes my mind who was an average person by all standards.
One doesn’t need to be a superhero to do extra ordinary in life. One can excel in life even if one is an average person http://sujatarajpal.blogspot.com/

I find myself very much related to your views as I am going through the same kind of situation. My son is going to join engineering college n start his hostel life very soon. We are trying to live each n every moment of our togetherness now which we always took for granted.

That's the reason why it is said that parents shouldn't try to put their opinion on their children and should never think that their child is waste if he is not able o perform well in academics.
