What's next for Indian IT Industry?
Sunday 24th, February 2008
I am proud that our country is known as IT prowerhouse of the world due to its exhorbitant growth in the IT and IT Enabled services.Indian Companies have reached so many milestones in a very short span of time.

Major chunk of revenues for the Indian IT companies are coming from US projects.Due to rupee appreciation and US slowdown our IT Companies have started feeling the heat. Hence they have started focussing on Japan, European and other untapped markets aggressively to sustain the revenues and profits.

Our companies should focus on the following areas apart from Servicing business to maintain their competitive edge from other low cost countries like china etc.

Consulting - Consulting is one of the most lucrative business for the IT companies. But its very tough to penetrate into this space and make profits.IT Consulting is a field that focuses on advising businesses on how best to use information technology to meet their business objectives. In addition to providing advice, IT consultancies often implement, deploy, and administer IT systems.Companies like Accenture, IBM are doing very well in the IT Consulting and implementation.Indian IT companies have started focussing on consulting business but its yet to bring profits like IT Services.
Hence our companies should get the customer confidence through value addition to the customer business through consulting.Only then we can compete with the giants like Accenture, IBM in the consulting business.
I hope our companies can do better in consulting as advising is part of our culture.

Focussing on Indian Market - Due to the booming of retail, telecommunication, and realty business in india indian IT companies should focus on local indian market to generate huge revenues. In the last couple of years IBM has bagged lot of multi million dollar projects from the indian companies. It is a great opportunity for the indian companies to cater the local market to compensate the revenue loss from US slowdown.

Product Innovation - This is one of the major area where Indian companies are lagging behind our global ounterparts. Now its time for our companies to give more serious thought on Product innovation. Our companies have developed various financial products which is used by many banks across the world. But we should strive to develop world class products like Windows, Oracle, SAP etc. This does'nt mean that we need to develope another operating system, Database or Enterprise products as it would be futile to compete with the existing products.

But we can concentarate on developing innovative products for the untapped areas which will be used by the common man across the world. This will not only bring more profits to the companies but also improve india's image from servicing nation to the innovative nation.

I hope India Inc's next step would be to focus on the above areas to stay on top in the coming years.

Thanks

Kathir

I could not agree with you more on product innovation issue for indian companies. I think even bigger issue is that there are hardly any great products for local market. Somehow, as a business, indian companies find it easier to get work from outside and make decent profit. But as a country, our not techie businesses do not get to benefit from productivity enhancements from new tech products.

Your Point 2 - Focus on Indian market - may not bring our IT sector the kind of profit to which they are accustomed. The US slowdown may well be an opportunity for our dollar-driven IT sector to redefine their goal; and their role in developing Indian economy. Should maxing profit be the determining factor in answer to the question: What Next ?
Kathir suggests retail, telecom and realty as the domestic sectors on which IT industry should focus on. A host of industries in other sectors - manufacturing, processing, infrastructure, transport and so on - are underserved or unserved by software development/application; and the bemefits it could bring to them. Our IT industry may not make as much profit, but with its focus on the under-served areas of the economy, our IT can help industries in rest of the economy level up their revenue/profit ; and raise the over-all growth rate of our economy.
Our IT industry could also focus on software development/application in not-for-profit sectors such as basic education, rural healthcare, NGOs sector, as part of IT's corporate social responsibility.
CSR and low profit could be plank on which IT industry could focus on neighbours - Nepal, Pakistan, Banglades, Sri Lanka - for reginal co-operation and development..

Great Kathir!!
At last you exposed your dialogues in blogs too.
"I hope our companies can do better in consulting as advising is part of our culture."
It's true. We can do it and of course we will do it...

Mr. Kathiravan emphasized opportunities in the consulting and applications sectors rightfully. These sectors are labor intensive and will employ many people. That is good! But if one looks at companies like IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Google, and CISCO, they make a few products and sell multi-million copies of them. These companies are valued in the multi-billion dollars. In the next ten to twenty years, India should look for ten to twenty such companies making whatever sells in millions of copies. That might be in operating systems, databases, communication systems, a variety of applications, and so on.
We may not foreclose any option from inventors and innovators. In fact, those who can afford should set up an idea factory in India and generate or collect 1000 ideas, patent 100 of them, and develop 10 mega products during the next decade.
