PRACTICING CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT
SCHEDULES AND DEADLINES
Thursday 27th, March 2008

The latest Corporate practices consist of deadlines, schedules, programmes and completion of the work ahead of the schedules. What a great philosophy. You rob at one end and pay at the other end. This was the practice we used to see in the cinemas. If you watch any movie you find that one thief will rob from the rich and pay to the poor. Same is happening today all over the world irrespective of the country, caste, creed, race or religion, BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

All the corporates, all the business people, all the traders are doing the business as if there is no tomorrow. All the corporates are conducting their businesses in such a way that they are keeping deadlines to the employees to perform in rigid, difficult, miserable, frustrating conditions. One has to get up in the morning at about 5.00 am and prepare children to schools, cook and start running to the office in a hurry. Some people in USA who are my friends say that they start going to the office and in the train they brush their teeth, wash their face, if lucky they take bath in the office, go to some bakery on the way take some food and start eating it and start the work. One doesnt have the time to eat, sleep, brush the teeth, take bath, change the clothes, do any of the daily chores.

One is forced to join the mad rush. Otherwise you loose the job. Fearing for the job and consequent money earnings you have to fight and do the job better than the others. Leaves are pre designed and you cant take leave for one more day. If you happen to face any difficult situation or happy situation of your relative or neighbour you cant go. You cant be a civilian in true sense. "But they preach so much about the civic sense". What is this senseless and mindless practice.

All these corporates are earning money to increase the value of their share holders. The goal of any corporate is to maximise the earnings of their share holders. To reach this goal they are practically and liberally robbing the most valuable and cherished affections and civic sensual responsibilities and their most valuable time of paying attention to their children, parents or other dependents. Employees are forced to work as slaves. Seeing this mad rush all the other people are under the impression that they also have to work like that. It is just like a flock of sheep - if one sheep is going in one direction then all the sheep follow without any brain.

What for we are living. Is there any peace of mind. is there any limit to the money that we earn. Is there any limit to the materialistic desires we have. Are not all the people missing a lot of fun, mental peace and happiness in their race to earn more and more money.

I really do not understand these deadlines. Why a dead line. While keeping the deadline cant the management of the company put a few days more so that their employees and even themselves will have time to discharge their obligations relating to the conscience. These are not social obligations, because social obligations have been redefined to be only to earn money, cultivate materialistic tendencies, holding valuable possessions and so on and so forth.

Think my dear friends think, only your thinking changes the world. As long as we dont think in the right direction nothing will change. Even the most brutal dicatators were forced to change just because there is a change in the thinking of the people.

If any corporate while fixing a deadline post pones the deadline by a few more days then so many people can relax and do the same work more effectively. Just by postponing the deadline by only a few days does not in any way reduce the earnings of the share holders. What i mean to say is that their wealth will not be reduced by a big margin. But by keeping deadlines they are forcing the people to reach a Dead Line.

My dear friends all over the silicon family please start thinking and sharing about these deadlines and the maximisation of the wealth of the share holders.

THINKING IS THE MOST POWERFUL TOOL AND SHARING IS MUCH MORE POWERFUL TOOL.

We are born only to live and lead the life happily. Happiness should be complete but it should not be guided by money and materialistic tendencies only. That does not mean that money is not important.

Let us all join hands in thinking and sharing common problems for attaining the everlasting peace and happiness.

Peoples friendly

I have gone through the message noted above. It is true that individual people should change their thinking method. This is only for giving good future to the next generation. Otherwise, we would also fall in line with the problems faced by the Western Countries.

Mr. Madhusudan Mannava is a very creative thinker and has emphasised on a very important point which affects the day-to-day life of working class.

Heaven will not fall if a work is not done desparately, in a haphazard manner, to meet the deadline. Rather by doing the work coolly, one can be more focussed, can visualise pros and cons of the work which one is handling and can be more productive. Increasing stress levels can have damaging effect not only on the person who is working but also on the person who is extracting job from others. Alarming increase in the rate of Heart, Kidney, Liver , Neuro problems at a younger age suggest that we all are affected by it.

But, contrarily, sometimes deadlines give you a challenge to perform the job efficiently and prove your mettle and to differentiate from the lot which can never perform better even if the situation is so demanding. When our house is on fire we act swiftly. When our family member is acute sick, we swing into action immediately without losing time. This suggests that similarly in the office too, there can be pressing problems which require immediate attention and alacrity to handle. In such a situation deadlines are productive and give job satisfaction to the person who is doing the job.

Therefore, a balancing act is required for reaction in emergent and non-emergent situations.. Everyday and every moment cannot be emergent . If it is so then we are working in stressful, hostile and ununhealthy environment which is totally avoidable.

The situation can be equated with a person who drives at a break-neck speed, frequently applies brakes, honks innumerable times, creates havoc and frightening situation on the road and reaches one minute ahead of the other driver who is driving coolly at a constant medium speed respecting and recognising that other persons driving the vehicle are also human beings and adjusts his speed and general on road behaviour.

For all situations in life , 'Lord Gautam Buddha' who started Buddh religion has suggested a "MEDIUM PATH" -- avoiding extremities. Therefore, the essence of the matter is that there cannot be aggressive deadlines every moment for all the normal day-to -day jobs and on the other hand there cannot be laidback, lethargic, and sloppy work attitude all the time.

True point. One thing which "force" somebody to join the mad rush is because the so called competitive world. If you say I will work 8 hours a day, there is someone ready to snatch your position if that person is willing to add a couple of hours a day to work. If we everybody stand with 8 hours, then our competitive nations (like China) are there behind. Its basically to do with how the economy on which we are running.

Very valuable insight.

Good topic, that is near and dear to me. I agree with Madhusudan that many times employees and employers forget the true meaning of their existence. I strongly believe in "Karma" that has a direction and done is harmonious way. I always have told my employees the big picture of work, how their piece fits into that puzzle. Once employees understand their role, importance of their work, they would do it more productively and happily without having to push them by unrealistic deadlines. I strongly believe in work-life balance as it is going to define how our next generation is going to shape for future.
The concept of “giving” also needs to be cultivated by employers, employees and families to keep track of what happens beyond their own boundaries.
