Coach That Matters
Tuesday 12th, August 2008

Abhinav Bindra was calm & composed on the podium when the Indian Tricolour went up and the national anthem was played.

26 years old Abhinav Bindra of Chandigarh hit bullseye in Beijing giving us our first -ever individual Olympic gold.

But for a year he could not lift a rifle. So bad was the injury that many were written off after he dropped out of the Doha Asian Games in December 2006

What a transformation from written of to India's Goldfingure?

Abhinav is a classic case where we can say "Coach That Matters".Study carefully the photograph wherein Abhinav's swiss coach Gabriele Buhlmann congratulates him which was published in Times of India dated August 12,2008 ,page number17.

Look at her sparkling bright eyes which are full of joy, love & all kind of emotions which were behind the success. No need to elaborate the point here in depth. For every success, there is always a "Coach That Matters" may be in the form of woman, man- some close relations.

The six month's hard training that swiss coach Gabriele gave to Abhinav, may be pouring her heart in Abhinav's development , paid of the altimate Olympic Gold success.

Entrepreneurer also needs a sound coach to meet competitive business opportunities & threats.Needless to say he needs again swiss coach like Gabriele pouring heart for the entrepreneurer's success.McClelland and Winter demonstrated that the achievement motive is the primary factor in coaching exercise of entrepreneurship. “The need to excel” known as achievement, is the single, psychological factor which has been found to be the common factor amongst coaches for entrepreneurs. They have been found to be people with high drive and energy, constantly struggling to push entrepreneurers to achieve something which they can call as their own achievement. They would like to be different from others. Douglas McGregor in his ‘hierarchy of needs’ was probably talking about this when he referred to the ‘self actualisation need .

Competitiveness by itself can be a misleading attribute. It is most important to distinguish between competition directed toward others without any objective measure of performance, and competition with a self-imposed standard. Competition directed toward beating the other person can have in it seeds of self destruction, e.g. price war below variable costs. This kind of competition has an externalised standard or no objective standard at all. This orientation tends to be more reactive to what others are doing, than being proactive in figuring out what to do before hand based on your goals, capabilities, resources etc Competition with self imposed standards is an internalised kind of competition. Here the coach forces an entrepreneur to perceive his own standards rather than standards of their competitors. High performance coach also possesses this internalised competitive spirit, in which he forces an etrepreneurer tocontinuously engage in competition with himself to beat his last best performance. The coach has a burning desire to excel .Most people dream of success and achievement, but do not take any actions towards achieving these dreams. A coach, on the other hand, has a strong desire to achieve a higher goal and make his/hers dreams come true. For them winning is achievement.

Hats off to Swiss Coach Gabriele Buhimann who was behind India's first ever individulal Olympic gold!

Good coaching without proper hard work can lead to sheer waste of time. Coaching should be supported by hard work and determination to achieve goal leads to success. That's the reason why abhinav won gold medal in olympics.
