Global perception of corruption in
India increased marginally with it being ranked 84 in 2008, slipping
12 ranks against 72 last year, on the corruption perception index. Its
integrity score on corruption perception index fell from 3.5 in 2007
to 3.3 this year on the scale of 1 to 10.
The country with a
higher score is rated more honest than the ones with lesser score.
"One wonders whether bundles of currency notes displayed in Parliament
during the trust vote debate in July had influenced such as
assessment," said Admiral (Retd) R H Tahiliani, chairman Transparency
International-India, the NGO that released the report on
Tuesday.
The TI-India rated police as most corrupt followed by
politicians. Among states, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir have extreme
corruption followed by Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.
India's arch
rival in business, China, improved its integrity score marginally to
retain its ranking at 72. The saving grace for India was that it had
been rated as least corruption nation in south Asia after
Bhutan.
