How Spam attacks

Email spam is like electronic junk mail. Cybercriminals send unwanted messages, often unsolicited advertising, to a large number of people. According to Symantec's latest report, spam now accounts for approximately 90% of all email messages and is a serious security concern. Spam can contain a variety of attacks that generally result in identity theft and serious financial loss.

How Do You Know You've Received Spam?

  • The message doesn’t include your email address in the TO: or CC: fields
  • The message contains offensive language or links to websites with inappropriate content
  • The message comes from an unfamiliar or unknown sender
  • The message contains content that prompts you to either reply or click through to a website that asks for your personal information
  • The message contains several types and/or misspellings

What To Do

  • Install Spam filtering/blocking software
  • If you suspect an email is spam, do not respond, just delete it
  • Consider disabling the email’s preview pane and reading emails in plain text
  • Reject all Instant Messages from people who aren’t on your Buddy list
  • Do not click on suspicious links to unknown sites within instant messages
  • Keep software and security patches up to date
  • Use Norton to protect yourself and your PC
