There is an undercurrent of global labor movement which I think will lead the rise of ‘Global Citizen’. It’s not just the developed world that is attracting labor from the third world countries. Emerging countries like India and Vietnam that are growing at a breakneck speed have a severe shortage of labor with management skills. They are opening up ways for people with that skill sets to migrate and work on a temporary basis in that country. The workers from the developed countries are taking up these new jobs to gain new experience even if it means living in harsher conditions than their home countries. The concept of dual citizenship is getting more and more popular. As countries start aggressively going after talent, I won’t be surprised to see the most talented worker becoming citizen of multiple countries. As the air travel gets faster and cheaper, global commute will become the norm for these ‘Global Citizens’. As the technology infrastructure solidifies with an ability to transmit data at a bandwidth that is exponentially broader, the work gets moved around at a faster rate.
All these trends will lead to creation of talented nomads, and I would like to call them ‘Global Flies’.
