(1-4 of 8)Poor State Of Our Sportsman
That Limba Ram is still inspired and motivated enough to bring more medals for our country tells as much of his mental strength and toughness as of the options available before him. It's not to doubt his skills and experience, but to feel that he cannot even take up a fight with the crooked guys who handle sports affairs in our country.
He tells that he is still single and has no plans to marry as he would not be able to provide good life to his wife and children.
Why can't the sports ministry or the particular games control board enter into long term sponsorship deal with corporates to ensure the players are provided world-class equipments and minimum respectable level of housing and other amenities. To perform at any level, it is important that one is mentally free of unnecessary tensions arising out of personal affairs. Who will understand it better than those corrupt officials who have been given command to control the affair of sports though they do not possess any related knowledge or skills, as they will go to any lenghts to demand good infrastructure, well-polished lifestyles, club memberships, etc. to carry out their tasks. But they would hardly do anything for the fellow athletes.
In an industrial set-up or an organised set-up, the employees or their union go on strike to get their rightful or unjustified demands fulfilled, but our sportspersons being better and cultured men and women they would hardly ever think of such a step and would rather let their performance do the talking. But it is state's duty also to look after such performers and support them throughout their career and beyond, and also use them, exploit them to train the upcoming generation of athletes.
As a country our image in the global arena will not get a facelift until we start respecting those who have brought cheers to the whole nation, be it in any field.
