Can You Damage a Laptop by Leaving the Charger on All Day?

Your laptop will not suffer too much harm from being left connected to the power supply. It is worth noting that a laptop left plugged in once the battery is fully charged will continue to draw Compaq Presario CQ61-200 AC Adapter, which can be wasteful. Leaving the power plugged in can also raise the internal temperature of the computer, which may gradually shorten the life of some components, especially the battery.

Power

Most laptops have a range of different power settings. Typically this will include an energy intensive "high-performance" setting and a power-saver setting that dims the screen and reduces energy use. Your laptop may automatically switch between settings, selecting the high-performance setting when mains power is connected; and switching to a lower-power setting when disconnected to prolong battery life. You can also select the  Fujitsu FMV-AC323 AC adapter setting you want to use manually. If the power is left connected when the computer is not in use and the battery is fully charged, it will continue to drain a small amount of power. This is wasted as heat, raising the internal temperature of the laptop.

Heat and Laptops

Heat, especially excessive heat, can shorten your laptop's lifespan. Allowing the air vents in the laptop's case to become blocked, for example by resting it on a pillow rather than a hard surface, can reduce performance and cause the laptop to fail. Reducing the heat will help your laptop perform better for longer. If you leave your laptop charging, it gets less of a chance to cool down. This probably won't cause problems in the short term, but in the longer term the extra heat might reduce performance.

Power and Laptop Battery Life

In general, it's a good idea to allow your laptop's battery to run down a little to prolong its life. Operating your laptop on Fujitsu FPCAC54AP AC adapter rather than plugging it in allows the battery to discharge. It's not necessary to allow the battery to run down completely; some batteries need to be discharged completely before recharging but laptop batteries are not of this type. This does not need to be done every day, once or twice a month is enough.

Heat and Laptop Battery Life

Heat is a major factor in reducing the lifespan of laptop batteries. Reducing the heat produced by your laptop can help prolong battery life. While the laptop is connected to the power supply, power is fed into the battery to charge it. This raises the temperature of the battery. Disconnecting the laptop when you're not using it will help to improve your battery's usable lifespan.
