Why the Thackerays are Angry?
Wednesday 01st, October 2008

The Thackerays are angry, very angry but no one (this includes the Thackerays themselves, I guess) really knows why. When the junior Thackeray, Raj Thackeray, is not angry, then it is the time of the senior Thackeray, Bal Thackeray, to be angry. We all know when the Thackerays are angry or when they appear to be so what happens in Maharashtra in general and Mumbai in particular.

From a Delhiwala becoming the Bollywood superstar to a UP walli professing her love for Hindi and Uttar Pradesh, there could be several factors that may raise the tempers of Thackeray and Company. Here, I am talking about the Bollywood Badshah Shahrukh Khan who is from Delhi and the actress Jaya Bachchan who hails from UP.

One wonders why the Thackerays love to hate the Bollywood biggies. Is it because they remind them of their own inferiority and position in the state of their birth? Or is it because these and similar other biggies are highly popular and ‘soft targets’?

We all know pretty well that the Shiv Sena Party has always promoted hate, narrow regionalism and communalism to survive and flourish. It attacks only those who are highly successful and from other states. If the targeted person happens to be from the minority community and/or from Bollywood, then the attacks made by the party and its bosses become even more scathing.

Bal Thackeray and Raj Thackeray claim they are championing the cause of Maharashtra and protecting the interests of its local people when they raise the issue of regionalism and state pride. This is anything but true. Just imagine what would happen if an enraged and hurt Bollywood decides to relocate to another state. What will be then left in Mumbai or in Maharashtra?

Bollywood is the pride of not only Maharashtra but entire India. It belongs to every Indian and not only to the Thackerays or the Marathi people. More importantly, every citizen of India from any Indian state and/or religion has a right to work and prosper in any Indian state including Maharashtra. The sooner Thackeray and Company understand this, the better for them and for Maharashtra.
