Irresponsible opposition parties and overzealous media in India

Let him who has no sin may cast the first stone at the "adulterous" woman. The irresponsible opposition parties and the overzealous Indian media constantly launch their virulent attack on the personal integrity of Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India for the misdeeds of His ministerial team.  The Prime Minister is not expected to know what happens in every room of his ministers.  He is not a super human being.  He is a man of like passions.

The CNN-IBN’s debates always portray Dr. Manmohan Singh in poor light. Every citizen who has some knowledge of politics knows Dr. Manmohan Singh as a man of impeccable integrity. It is seen from the affidavit filed by Dr. Manmohan Singh submitted to the returning officer in Assam while filing his nomination papers for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections that he does not have any cash in hand and owns a 1996 Maruti car, unlike many of his colleagues and that his total annual income is Rs.40,51,964. Let the opposition parties and the media conduct their own investigations into this matter to know the truth.

There is no justification for the principal opposition party to cast the first stone at him, demanding his resignation on every occasion of exposure of corruption, conveniently ignoring the truth that its own image has been battered by allegations of corruption, particularly when it had to eat the dust of ignominy in the electoral arena of Karnataka.

The 2G spectrum case is under trial in the court of law and the coal allocation scam is still under investigation by the CBI.  The ministers concerned have been removed from their posts.  The opposition parties are not satisfied with the final actions of the government in sacking the ministers concerned.  They demand the resignation of the Prime Minister even on the plea of delay in taking action against the Railway Minister who has recently been removed from the post.  The action of Shri Ashwani Kumar as the Union Law Minister in calling the CBI director for an official meeting just to vet the draft status report of the CBI is not a very serious matter at all as is being made out by the opposition parties and by the media.  This matter is still sub judice. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has to declare its final verdict but has passed merely some observations after perusing the affidavit of the CBI Director.  It will take a final call after perusing the affidavit to be filed by the executive on 10th July, 2013.  But, the television channels, especially the CBI-IBN are simply frittering away their precious time in debating over matters which are non-issues and in passing judgments over dignitaries and over matters which are not yet finally adjudicated by the courts of law.

Even if some attempt is perceived to have been made by the Law Minister in deleting some particular sentence from the status report just to protect the Prime Minister, at this stage, no evidence of tampering of documents or of influencing witnesses or of shielding any particular person from the CBI investigation has come on record.  If some impropriety has been committed by the Minister concerned and the bureaucrats concerned, appropriate corrective action can be taken by the government after the Supreme Court gives its final verdict in the matter.  This is something between two constitutional institutions i.e. judiciary and executive.  The media cannot live in an imaginary world, usurping itself the role of a judge at this stage.  The Media cannot sit in judgment over the purported action of impropriety by interviewing the retired bureaucrats or retired police officers for their opinions.

The media itself is not a holy cow.  By earning money through unethical advertisements and through “paid news”, the media should not cast the first stone at the “adulterous” woman, joining hands with the irresponsible opposition parties.   The media has not yet caught the adulterous woman in the very act with the help of witnesses but are merely anchoring their reporters with cameras near the residences and offices of Union ministers, Prime Minister and Chairman of UPA and interviewing, through open debates, retired bureaucrats who nurture the grudge against the government of not being rehabilitated after their retirement.

The BJP youth wing has marched to the residence of the Prime Minister other demanding his resignation.  The party which allowed its cadres to demolish the historic Babri Masjid and to kill the thousands of innocent Indian citizens belonging to minority religions and which was recently rejected by the people of Karnataka on the sole plank of corruption has no moral right to demand the resignation of an honest Prime Minister.

The media persons have anchored their cameras on the gates of the residences and offices of the ministers concerned to make out their own stories as if they have no important event in this nation to cover except the agitations of political parties on the gates of the residences and offices of the ministers concerned.

The opposition parties have murdered the constitutional institution of the legislature by not allowing the Indian Parliament to function on the pretext that there is no use debating such matters on the floor of the House but, at the same time, choosing the unethical forum of debates through television channels.  Now the media supported by the opposition parties is bent on driving a wedge between the executive and the judiciary over issues which are not yet adjudicated by the courts of law.

The media are looking for "breaking news" and sensational news to be gathered from the gates of the residences and offices of the ministers when the nation is burning.  The media has slipped away from the highest standards of fair and ethical reporting, treading on the dangerous path of sensationalism.

On 13th May 2013, there was a debate in CBN-IBN on the difference of opinion between Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Chairman, UPA and Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister and on the speculation of Mrs.Sonia Gandhi preferring some senior Cabinet Minister to replace Dr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister. In a democratic party, difference of opinion is bound to be there.  Ultimately, a unanimous decision was taken by the Congress Party to seek the resignation of both the Ministers concerned. This matter became sensational news for CBI-IBN and there was a debate on this. Any media person has the full freedom to make a guess or to make a prophecy. But such a freedom should be exercised ethically without affecting the image or reputation of the highest dignitary of the nation i.e. the Prime Minister. When the media is very cautious in criticizing the judgments of the High Courts and the Supreme Court fearing contempt of court, it feels emboldened to guess and to express their opinions on the Prime Minister in a derogatory manner.
