A machine is accompanied by a user manual. Yet we do not have such a map for the most sophisticated system that each one of us own and use.
Each one uses it in their own ways, yet there must be some principles that one cannot do without for achieving better outcomes. Self is the system through which we see which is much more than a mechanical process since the visual stimuli are interpreted through our internal maps and meaning is created in the process. Self is also the interface through which choices are made. The choices decide whether human actions lead to improvement or otherwise.
It is an imperative that this interface issue is managed better in a flatter world with more and more choices available to each individual. This opportunity could as well be a threat depending on how the interface is aligned resulting in greater good or havoc that an individual or a group could impact.
Self is the observer and in a larger sense, also the observed. Reality is perceived as well as created by the mental models which have evolved over the history of humanity. If the world has turned out to be imperfect, it has more to do with these models of the world than the world outside.
Being the instrument of all knowing and learning, study of the self forms the first discipline and the foundation and unifier for other disciplines. The practice evolved through a process of dialogue since 1990 using the integral framework as tool to provide inputs for discussion, dialogue and convergence in the process of discovering, enhancing and strengthening the individual, group, organisational and community self. The tool served as roadmap for unification, continuous improvement and renewal transcending conventional approaches of specific disciplines to bring them together into a coherent whole, a new way of looking at reality .
The approach incorporates positioning, measurement, feedback and self correction - the functions of the compass, clock and the feedback system - that enables the traveller to be on course.
