Success is all in passion, performance and perseverance
Monday 11th, August 2008

While I was driving this morning to my office, I recalled the photo caption in my morning companion’s supplement – “ALL ABOUT CARING: Nursing is all about passion, compassion and dedication

I started thinking seriously about success and what makes one successful in one’s profession. I realized that only by being passionate, performing and persevering one can be sure of success in one’s endeavours.

What is passion? Well. It is the starting point in one’s career. If one is not passionate about one’s profession, then one can conclude s/he would not be successful. One may counter that dreaming is very important and dreams really leads to success. Some how or other, I don’t believe in this, as according to me dreams occur only when we sleep. When we are awake we don’t recall our dreams or such dreams do not occur or recur. Some may indulge in daydreaming but we all know how realistic such dreams would be. Hence I would like to substitute dreams with passion. Only passion with its fervor, obsession, and craze will live with one during day and during night and this passion will alone drive one to success. Passion should be persisting one and not a passing one. If the passion is persisting, it will drive us, virtually mad, to see that we acquire everything to realize our passion. It will automatically make things happen.

What is performance? According to me, performance is that extra in our normal delivery, expectation, and focus. That is why we define performers are those who run that extra mile in their efforts to make things qualitatively better and happen. We are paid for the minimum we are expected to deliver. But when we perform we reward us with our appreciation and satisfaction. This will become a contagious disease in that we will ourselves look for performance in our roles. Once we reach that stage, others will start appreciating us as ‘star performers’.Ultimately our organizations will be able to realize extra premium from their ‘performing’ products / services from their customers. May be, only from such extra premiums, our organizations are rewarding our star performers.

What is perseverance? Despite being passionate, despite being a performer, sometimes success may still elude us. In such circumstances, one should not lose faith in being passionate and performing. One need to be resolutely pursue one’s passion and performance. Such insistence, firmness and determination may demand extra efforts and time. Such perseverance may be needed in extreme situations where the ground realities are not friendly and supportive. For obvious reasons, the other ‘non performers’ may not like one to really ‘perform’ in one’s profession and role. Probably the other ‘non performers’ may be afraid that their stake may go down or their comfort zone would be affected. In such situations they may make work place life miserable for the one who is passionate and performing. In such situations, one may need to persevere in one’s efforts.

Well. When I almost reached my office’s security gates, I realized that success is no different from nursing as a career - passion, compassion and dedication. To achieve success, we only need to nurse our passion.

Let us make this happen.

Thank you JS for your comment. Well. All of us face such situations at some time or other in the work place. The best way to react to such idiosyncrasies of our immediate bosses is just to ignore them and continue with our passion. Because we owe our performance to ourselves and none else. I am happy to note that despite this, you still want to continue your passion towards work. This will lead you to laurels very soon. Well. Incidentally, may I suggest to you to go through my other blog - Why successful organizations fail?

But what should I do in a situation like this.I am a Grade 1 engineer in my team. I worked for my team doing 60% of overall billing with such a passion to do something more for the organization as the other team members of same and higher grades handled less part of work. But nothing is communicated to my boss through my superiors. When the appraisal time came , my Boss rated me as an average contributor and people who done 5 % billing got as Extraordinary performer. I still want to continue my passion towards work and success. So which way I have to choose...to make justice to my efforts....
Am really thankful to the great suggestions..!

gud stuff, what r d measures of sucess, how do we claim to be sucessful it is not define any where, it is not to acquire big wealth, it can' be .... it is a simple feeling.... a state of mind it should not be related with passion performing or perserving it cant be distoryed and it cant be preserved as it is not a thing it does not has any shape and size it needed much more to think upon success. much much much more.......

Good one. Passion is intense desire to do something, irrespective of the outcome.

Passion and dream has some relationship.. right?

Dream is reflection of our thougts (inner thoughts) while we are awake. When one is passionate it will reflect in the dream.

Ramana says there is no difference between dream and awake stages since both are not real. ;-)

Herein I would like to know the meaning of success which certainly starts with passion and if travels through all stages for achieving the crowning glory, it becomes meaningful but the question arise that how we should contend with the situational factors like family, society and others when we are only passionate for a defined objective.I do apprehend that in absence of making balance in our life, we may find castle and self satisfaction at the end of the tunnel but after losing many things, therefore, I do believe that we should safeguard ourselves from excessive theory and should put our endeavour to make a balance in our career, persnal life and society because our existence and success can not defined without the society.

An excellent article. Might I suggest that honesty and transparency should be included in the three P's mentioned above. These days success is measured by the amount of wealth one accumulates. Ultimate balance and happiness can only be achieved through selfless endeavour.

But at times destiny also plays a vital role in achieving success because couple of time people try hard through out but don't get success then, they achieve success at times when they don't work upon it i.e they reap benefit of the deeds done by them in past.
