Leader's job becomes harder when things are hard and not going smoothly. I have personally seen leaders during hard times and you may have seen some too. Examples of troubled times are
- When a companyeam is not doing as well as expected (financially or other wise)
- Key team members are leaving (rather deserting the leader)
- Leader's vision is not materializing and he is not able to keep the promises he made
- His personal problems are over shadowing his efforts at work and for his team.
and many more..
Imagine a simple situation when a team is loosing a game and how the leader/coach reacts in such a situation in restoring confidence. What happens in such a situation? No one wants to be part of a loosing team. Emotions start to build up, enthusiasm wanes, morale goes down, communication goes down.
Leaders need to make an honest assessment of situation and explain facts. Leaders need to have courage to admit what went wrong and take personal responsibility, if needed. Excuses or blame will not help.
Be prepared for such situations when getting into a leadership role.
