CAT 2010: Earlier than usual, longer testing window, Prometric to stay, NIIT to go

Among the major modifications planned in the administration of the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2010, the exam will be held earlier than usual, over a longer period of time and over fewer testing centers.

While the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have retained Prometric for delivering the test, NIIT — the ground technology partner of the exercise has been let go of. “We are currently engaged in finalizing the list of local technology partners who will work with us in the areas of site readiness, test administration and on-site technical support”, said Soumitra Roy, Prometric India’s Managing Director.

After last year’s not-so-smooth CAT 2009 which affected testing experience for over 10,000 candidates, Prometric said that it was also reviewing all processes and technology employed during CAT after a comprehensive audit of CAT 2009 protocols, a performance review of the testing centers and candidate feedback.

Improvements have been made in the preparation, registration and delivery areas in order to enhance the overall experience for candidates. “The plan includes a longer testing window to provide candidates with more choices; a longer test site preparation period; improved technology for both registration and delivery; and a reduction in testing sites to ensure a higher quality test experience for all candidates. The reduction in sites will not compromise the nationwide reach and availability of the test,” said a Prometric statement released to the media.

“We are taking every step possible to ensure a successful administration for the CAT 2010 candidates. To avert potential overlaps in schedule with college exams, Prometric has recommended an earlier testing period. The final dates and details on registration and scheduling will be announced officially by the IIMs,” he further added.

While Prometric has not announced the exact dates, a source associated with last year’s CAT administration told that the IIMs were considering dates as early as in the second-half of October 2010 for commencing the testing window for CAT 2010.
