Never Miss An Opportunity
Let me give you an example in the form of a story about a man who missed his opportunity.
There once lived a middle aged man who, in terms of occupation, was a fisherman. This is what he had done for most of his life. He was also a huge believer of God. He would pray every morning before he set out for his day of fishing, in the hope of a good catch.
One day he set out to go fishing as normal. After a couple of hours, he was quite content with what he had caught. He began to notice the sea was becoming rough, and dark coulds had begun to form above him. He knew a storm was about to follow.
He decided to end his day of fishing early and head back home. But within minutes, the heavens opened. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning followed. The waves began to get biggerand started to hammer his boat badly. The fisherman became extremely frightened for his life and began to pray.
Within seconds, his boat was hit by a huge wave. But before he had time to think, he was knocked unconscious by some piece of debris from his boat.
When he woke up, he realised he was lying on a broken segment of his boat. He slowly sat up and looked around. There was nothing but water everywhere. He was pleased to be alive, but not happy with his circumstances. With this he decided to lie down again, closed his eyes, and began thnking of God.
After a while, he began to hear voices. He opened his eyes and saw two other fishermen in their trawler. They happily offered their assistance. But amazingly the man refused by saying, "God will help me."
The two fishermen looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders, started their engines, and went away. The man lay back, closed his eyes and beagn thinking of God again.
After a while, he heard voices again. He looked up and saw a huge cruise ship. There was also a life boat with two men coming towards him. They happily offered their assistance. But again the man refused by saying, " God will help me."
The two men offered to bring some food. But again the man refused. The two men looked at each other in dismay as they headed back to the cruise ship. Once they were onboard, the ship continued on its journey.
After a few days, the man was becoming desperate. He had had no food or water for this duration, and hence was very weak.
The next day, He was lying odwn with his eyes closed, when he heard a sound. He opened his eyes and saw a helicopter approaching. The pilot offered his assistance, But amazingly the man refused yet again, saying," God will help me."
The next time the man woke up, his instincts hold him he was in heaven. He began to get angry. Why had he died when he was a great believer in God?
As if from nowhere he heard a voice,
"Why do you feel anger towards me?"
"I have had great belief in you all my life." The man shouted,
"Yet when I needed you the most, you did not help me."
There was a slight silence. Then the voice said,
"I saved you from the storm. Then I sent you a fishing trawler to rescue you. But you declined. I then sent you some luxury in the form of a criuse ship. But you declined that as well. And their offer for food. I then sent you your very own helicopter. But again you declined that. I gave you three opportunities to live after I rescued you from the storm. You had the opportunity to choose your destiny. Unfortunately, you choose the wrong path."
You see, just like the fisherman, we too are offered many opportunities to achieve in life. But it is our Responsibility to be open and willing to take them.
Until next week.
