Social Consciousness
I had mentioned about our Rotary Club’s commitment to various socially beneficial projects. As a Rotarian we become more and more socially conscious. We get lot of points for our combined efforts and our families feel proud to associate in our endeavor by attending our meeting, except the fellowship followed after the meeting. Yesterday was our Installation day grandeur. As usual we were all with our family.Dignitary from other clubs also joined in the function. Our chief Guest was Mr. Jaykumar IAS, who is in charge of HOME affairs in GOK. He is a great scholar and son of a scholar and a renowned film producer.
His topic in the Installation ceremony was on Social consciousness. I would like all of you to have an appreciation of that visionary, by not appreciating me for this Blog. I am confident enough to realize that telling the TRUTH is no way degrade me in the society nor I am going to loose any thing. The result is going to be that during our next meeting my rotary friends, those who are going to read this Blog can only congratulate me. In the process my goodwill and my human life value will never ever go down. Please be informed these words are not to pat my back by myself, but to make you realize the important benefit of Social Consciousness in your life. Social consciousness refers to thinking of others.
The very purpose of establishment of places of worship such as temple, church and mosque is to encourage Social consciousness. In olden days all the disputes and reforms were done under the tree of religious establishment and issues were solved then and there, unlike today, for each every simple reasons people go to the court. Such that thousands of people had either lost their lives fighting the cases or had become pauper. Needless to mention many advocates made fortunes in the process.
In today’s context, as the nations are suffering due to global recession, common man finding difficult to make both end meet, social consciousness is a matter to be given significant importance. See how many millions of rupees and valuable time was lost due to the foolishness of 10 terrorists in Mumbai attack and Parliament attack. As the country is developing ignorance in people is also increasing due to half knowledge about their religion. I am very confident in my mind most of the Hindus who talks about Hinduvata, does not know the meaning of the word NAMASTHE – meaning God in me bows in front of the God in you. Or has understood Gita, where it is clearly written about the one supreme controller. They don’t know the meaning of Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Situation is not different in Muslims and Christians also. Those who fight for their religion, has never ever believed or learned what Mohamed Nabi and Jesus has said. I can assure you that a True Muslim or a True Christians is no way different than a True Hindu in their worship to the Supreme Controller. Here astrologers and self made God men, politicians and people greedy to the core are playing the tunes for illiterate and ignorant common people dance to the tune with well orchestrated speeches. Americans failed due to greediness , where as
Having written this, the only solution to this problem is to make the common men socially conscious.
As Swami Vivekananda said, (it is not the actual words, but the meaning is same); To fulfill your life goal, love the world as a whole,’Lokaa Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu’.
If you cannot love the world, love your country. .’Vanthe Matharam’, If you cannot love your country, love your neighbor hood, ‘Adhididevo bhava’. If you cannot love the neighborhood, at least love your wife!
Mr. Jaya Kumar was saying that 'I am talking on the subject because; the group in front of me are people who realized Social Conscience'.
He said, 'The first thing I do after all my rituals and visit to the temple is the worst thing I don't want to see'. Being classified under top priority, his Secretary keeps all the files of thugs on the pile of files on his table for his signature. He was telling that the lives of the thugs are most miserable. He used the word BURN; they burn their life in prison, or moving from one court to other or at the mercy of greedy who had engaged them to do anti social activities with an eye on amassing wealth. Situation for greedy is also has not much difference than the life of thugs.
Then, Mr.Jayakumar went on with the story of Leo Tolstoy. A story most of you might have read. The story is about a greedy person. The story is something like this, I don’t remember fully. An aged land Lord in
One among the people gathered started vigorously in ear marking the land and walked. As the time passes, he would think I would ear mark some more land and get back fast. He kept on walking and earmarking, amassing more and more land. Time passed by, he thought he could amass some more and run back faster that he would reach back to the land owner before the sun set. At last the man turned around and started running faster and faster to reach on time as the sunset is nearing. By the time he reached the owner he vomited blood and fell at the feet of the land Lord DEAD. The land lord declared to give him the land he now wants, SIX FEET of LAND, to bury his body.
Mr.Jayakumar’s message was sound and clear about the fate of those who are on to amass the wealth and remaining selfish.
He went on with two more instances on the topic, one from a famous poem in Malayalam and with a short real life story before his concluding message. The real life story is about an old man who was traveling with him. They became friends. To while away the time they started with casual talks about their children. The man was on tears as he had only one daughter who is in a very high position in a corporate in Mumbai. This man was traveling back home after a major surgery and post operative care. He was discharged on that day morning. It was some of his relative helped him to the hospital when he had a major heart attack. Cardiac surgery was inevitable for his survival. Arrangements were made for the surgery and the daughter was alarmed on the status. She immediately took the next flight and reached the hospital late by 5 minutes before the her father was taken to the operation theater. She could not meet her father. She straight away went to the reception and asked them what could be the total anticipated expenses her father would likely to incur. She was in a Hurry! She had to attend an urgent meeting at her office at 4 PM. It is very very urgent. She told the receptionist. The receptionist gave her the estimate. The daughter immediately pulled out her credit card and made the payment and requested the receptionist and relatives to take care of her father, Took the next flight back to Mumbai. Till that day of discharge, the father has not met his daughter. The daughter is a very senior executive in the company totally wedded to her company & her profession. Her every achievement is being applauded and extra pay package is given to her.
Mr.Jayakumar went on for another ten minutes to conclude and established efficiently and effectively the need for social consciousness among the people. I am concluding with this with out any comments.I leave it to you for your own judgment.
Vanthe Matharam!

The Japanese view the family as a source of stability and strength and believe that an individual cannot reach his or her full potential in the outside world without the support of the family. The decline in the birth rate since the Second World War has resulted in smaller families. However, elderly relatives may live with their children, as Japanese tradition requires children to take care of their parents in their old age.
Japanese children have traditionally been taught that being part of a group is more important than individuality and that poor behavior in public will reflect badly on the family and society in general. They are taught to obey authority. They must also learn the complicated rules of formal behavior that characterize Japanese society. These rules are based on traditions of honour, loyalty and the importance of saving face. Although the influence of Western culture is beginning to erode these ideas, they are still strong in many parts of
Thirty years ago, most young people were married by the age of 25. Today, men and women may wait a few more years to get married. Most couples meet at work or university. A system known as miai (arranged meeting) helps with introductions. Before marriage, many men and women continue to live at home with their parents, largely because of a shortage of affordable housing.
