I thought it was the British who were known for their fascination and
obsession with surnames and knighthoods – but seems India might
overtake on this frontier as well.
Amitabh Bacchan is Big B
for more than a decade – Shah Rukh Khan crafted his self knighthood
very well to be branded as King Khan . Saif Khan is fondly referred
to as Chote Nawaab ( his dad was the original Nawab of Pataudi) and
even Virendra Sehwag got adorned as Najafgarh ka Nawaab ! Saurav
Ganguly prides in being the Royal Bengal Tiger ! This list is long
and it is anyone’s guess how quickly this will grow.
Nothing
wrong I suppose – except that the real respect and the hard work and
legacy that others had to earn their “title” seems trivialized
over years. Now it is more a media “plant” where you have Brand
Managers and strategists playing a bigger role than the reasons why
you earned them.
Another thing to note in this list is the
absence of Entrepreneurs, Business leaders, Educationists,
Community leaders and activists, Economists, and hordes of other
professionals who are quietly working hard to build India.
I
feel we might be misplacing our priorities a bit .
