Increasing Attrition level in India's BPO and IT sector
Wednesday 11th, April 2007
India’s outsourced service sector is booming, the way overseas manufacturing boomed in China several years ago; it’s apparent in both the call centers and software outsourcing industries. While India is making great leaps and bounds in its service sector, I question if Indian companies have the knowledge and personnel training necessary to deliver American standard service.

I am writing this article to express my concerns, about the way in which many talented people of our country are being exploited by some, who claim to be the country’s well wishers and it this disguise keep on filling their own pockets. When I meet people, working in contact centers or call centers, I clearly see the frustration hidden inside them, which they are unable to express publicly. They work very hard during the nights, awake against their bio-clock, fighting to excel in their work and come up with an out-standing performance.

Deep inside they are frustrated with the way they are made to do their work. At the junior or middle executive level they are asked to report to an immature Manager or so called Team Lead who lacks proper knowledge. People of the upper management ignore such problems faced by executives. In some of the leading outsourcing companies in Pune I have observed a disgusting HR dept, which is not at all bothered with the concerns, their junior and middle level employees have. They tend to forget that on the basis of the work done by these employees, the company is able to meet the SLAs and are able to keep up to their service commitments. They treat recruitment as a marketing activity, lure more and more people to come and join the organization instead reducing the attrition level.

The other day I came across one of my acquaintance, this guy belongs to Punjab and wears a turban, he works for a leading financial company from USA having its base in Pune India. The company’s back office operations are executed from this location. This guy holds the title of an associate manager, I observed that he don’t have proper education in terms of any management degree, got a huge ego, thinks that he is always right and other people are always wrong, enjoys dominating people, cannot even talk sensibly. I don’t have any personal grievances against this guy but I wonder how these trends of his personality got unnoticed by the HR Manager of the organization he is working for. God knows how those people who report to him and work under his supervision will coping up with him or rather tolerating him.

I got the answer pertaining to this question, when I met this person who works as one of the Associate Vice Presidents of the Human Resource Dept, with a leading BPO in Pune. I was really amused to find this guy being so rude, arrogant, and nonsensical. He didn’t have the ability to judge a person; I really feel that he got the title coz of good contacts that’s it. The person was not even fit to work as an executive and he was working as an AVP.

After having mentioned the above two examples I seriously think that some action should be taken by these companies who are making huge profits and are providing job opportunities to most of the talented people in this country. The recruitment of the upper management should be checked.

I have seen and witnessed hundreds of such examples, having spent past many years in the service industry I would surely try to post some of them in future.

If the people about whom I have written so far come across this article of mine. I really wish after reading this they should try to improve their selves.

At the end of course training’s the only way to solve this shortcoming, but I wonder how easy that is to accomplish for these companies who have assumed and some of them even believe that they are perfect in all aspects and it’s the employees who are responsible for this increase in the attrition level.
