‘Nagpur City to be second logistics capital ’
In a
landmark achievement set to spur Vidarbha’s economy, the Deccan
Cargo Pvt Ltd signed an MoU with Maharashtra Airports Development
Company (MADC) for setting up a state-of-art cargo hub at multi-modal
international passenger and cargo hub at Nagpur (Mihan) on Thursday.
The base is expected to start functioning by the end of this year or
January 2009.
MADC would provide Deccan Cargo 50 acres land at Mihan for setting the cargo base including parking facility.
Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who is chairman of MADC and Gopinath signed the MoU in the presenece of Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel and Union minister for new and renewable energy Vilas Muttemwar and MADC managing director R C Sinha.
Deshmukh said that the cargo base would enable Vidarbha’s farmers to sent their produce abroad and get higher prices. He expressed confidence that other airlines who are planning to set up cargo base in Nagpur would realize their plans soon.
Capt Gopinath of Deccan Cargo said that only seven cities in India have air cargo connectivity. The small cities should get air cargo connectivity as soon as possible to enable expansion of economy.
“Industry’s production cost comes down by 25% if the country has air connectivity. Industries have to spend less on inventories and warehouses with air cargo connectivity,” he said.
Gopinath said that Deccan would make Nagpur the cargo hub in India, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Europe.
Airport transfer soon
Nagpur airport is likely to be transferred to a joint venture company of MADC and Central government in a union cabinet meeting by month end, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told the media on Thursday.
‘City to be second logistics capital ’
Nagpur: Deccan plans to cover 85% of India’s GDP in terms of distribution. “At present Hong Kong is the logistics capital of Asia. Nagpur will become the second largest and possibly the largest in Asia,” said Gopinath. Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that Air India Cargo Division will roll out by the end of this year. Air India might also locate their hub at Nagpur.
CM Vilasrao Deshmukh complimented Gopinath for picking up Nagpur. “My dream city is Nagpur and my dream project is MIHAN,” Deshmukh told the gathering. He said it was a giant leap in the economic development of not only Nagpur but Vidarbha and Maharashtra.
Muttemwar said by Julyend, the MoU between defence ministry, civil aviation ministry and MADC would be signed to hand over the land of IAF Transport Aircraft Project to MADC for constructing a second runway.
