Shooting down a star!
Monday 11th, August 2008
Indian sports stars suddenly have some thing to look forward to, thanks to Abhinav Bindra. Even as the nation has started celebrating the gold he shot down in China, the media seem to be going for the overkill. I don't have any qualms about the nation and its media eulogising the lad for the feat he has performed. But the overkill might be just the end of a career that has the potential to blossom further.

Remember, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore? Pre-Beijing, the last we heard about him was ages ago. Then suddenlly he appeared as the mascot for a two wheeler company and hen as the flag bearer of a shabbily dressed Indian contingent at the opening ceremony of the ongoing summer games. The media had reported, analysed and advised Rathore soon after he came back with a medal last time.

Soon after that he was forgotten, from Page 1 and Page 21 he just faded away to oblivion.he has returned with much expectations, but god knows how fit he is.

Bindra's situation may be in for worse times. The media has already started. The so-many-but-worth-little telly channels are celebrating the manna from Beijing and are resting assured that they have enough stuff to fill prime time.

Browsing through Kerala's various television channels made me laugh aloud yesternite. One of them had an analysis on how, why, and what Bindra did on Tuesday at Beijing. Poor lad, responsiblties and expectations are being thrust upon him. A career is on its way to doom. God save the kid.
