India is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the largest democracy in the world.

Languages spoken:
India is a multilingual society with 22 principal languages recognized by the constitution. Hindi is the language of a large percentage of people (38 per cent), while English is the preferred business language.

Major religions:
Majority are Hindus, with a significant number are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and others.
India is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country, and the largest democracy in the world.

Individual mother tongues in India number several hundred; the 1961 census recognized 1,652.

India is a federal republic of twenty-eight states and seven Union Territories.

If anybody in the world see all these staggering facts and figures, would say – “O MY GOD”!!!
Leave the whole world aside together on one side and we have India on the other, the Mother of all, which is huge and vastly diverse.
I m sure every single Indian is as proud as me of all these astonishing figures and facts about India’s diversity and most importantly, this is how we project ourselves to the outside world. We showcase, we are the most diverse country of the world where we have such a huge multicultural and multi-lingual pool of people, which you cannot find in any other country in the world.
India is undoubtedly, the flavor of the world where every 100 kilometers you will find yourself in the different heaven. You will not just find the changes geographically but you will witness a difference in the language, the clothing, the food, the architectural changes in the buildings/housings and the people. If someone decides to go from northern most tip of India towards the southern most end of India, he would have so much to narrate to his grand children’s that even this life will be short for him.

But this is how whole world look to us, this is how India is known at the highest level but how about this--->

Whenever a south Indian moves to the north of India, he becomes the cynosure of jokes, mockery and vice-versa it’s the same. Why at the work place we try to find people from our native to form our group or friend circle? Why we discriminate each other on the basis of religion, languages and geographies? Why we try to show our culture more superior to the others? Why we want our local language to gain the heritage status as comparison to other languages? Why we say that we are only going to give jobs to the people of our state and we will beat the hell out of the others?

Well, I can give hundreds of such reasons which had made me think in the contrary i.e. the very fact of being the Most DIVERSE country in the world which used to make me proud is now becoming the curse of my country. I know, we have this habit of moving away from all things by putting the blame on the politics and on our great political leaders but come on, its us who are selecting them, we are the largest Democracy in the world, isn’t it ??
It’s really a sad fact that India’s National Language is Hindi and the official language is English. Ok leave both of these languages and taking all other languages into account, is there a single language on which we can be dependent and go anywhere in our country with people understanding it? Sadly the answer is BIG NO!!
Politics and corruption has got so much into the system, that shameful incidents like what has happened in Maharashtra took place where we started ourselves discriminating not on the basis of Hindu – Muslims which has been our story since 1947 but now its within Hindu’s itself, only Marathi’s can work there. This awful state of our politics could be because of the bad politicians but you have see the fact that with every good or bad politician there is always an ample amount of support who is non other than the COMMON MAN of India.
The corruption has increased so much in our system that a police man will ignore a person not wearing a helmet having a vehicle of same state but will stop the outsider, in the hope of getting bribed. But again who bribe them, it’s us again.
The whole country has been divided in so many criteria’s that it has become tough sometimes to find the reason of conflict.
We have to inculcate the feeling of integrity and only “INDIAN-NESS” in ourselves. We have to work together with each other with only one feeling i.e. of “ONE NATION AND SAME PEOPLE” rather than ONE NATION AND DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
It’s the time when we wake-out of this sinful era of trauma and discrimination, be it on the basis on gender, religion, caste, culture or region. If we want ourselves to live a peaceful happy life and grow, than we have to mature with the feeling of “ONE INDIA”….and may we be our nation will be world super power soon….because country’s people are its strength.

1:India is vast and full of diversity be it lingual, environmental, geographical or people's mindset....all we need to do is clear our minds from discrimination and biases.Free, clear and clean mind can nurture unity in diversity....democracy is our say....so why not remove the biased democrats and bring to the forefront who exercises none of the crap politics of divide and rule game....Youth has to take the command but with ubiquitous assent of all.....
i loved this article and would like to give 3 cheers to writer..Bravo!!!

2:Will you have married the girl(now your wife)even if your parents have objected to it? Or if she is from a lower caste or social background. I also married a girl from another state from same social and religious background though i have the knack of falling in love always!!!!!!!!!!

3:My story is pretty much the same and i too

4:I appreciate your words toward india ,One thing can change india, well a question for you, will you marry a girl from your birth state or from other state , i will say that you will marry from the same state from your same caste why ? You will blame your family ? This can be changed only by youth when you start gettin married girl from other whatever the impact occurs from this there will be no state, then i can say we have unity in diversity. But right now i dont find in india, it was never before , if need a change it can only happen from youths , about the work i support you , i have seen it , that depends on the manager of that concerned. organisation .

5:I appreciate your comments thanks for reading
the article with so much interest. Well on a
personal note I had a love marriage and my
wife is from different state. Infact, I know
a good number of people who kind of engaged
or married to different language speaking
people. But I want to give credit to the
parents too because my parents or the parents
of people who I talked about never had any
objections on the marriage so that is the
change in their attitude but we need this
change in the masses not just 100's or 1000's
of families. What I m trying to say is along
with Youth everyone else has to change their
mindset and be open.

6: We need this change in the masses in one
morning? we have to change ourself first then
in our family, society, then to the district,
state and whole country...so point the finger
to yourself first....than the masses

7:Lets stop blaming each other. Even lets stop discussing about it, enough has been discussed. If we want to come out of this situation we have to be more self discipline and learn to respect ourselves then only I think we can show respect to others. We must get aware that if this discrimination goes on very soon we will start discriminating within the same language, culture. Then what divide Maharashtra, Bengal, Gujrat into pieces?

8:Piyali,
First of all thanks for
reading it and leaving your opinion on the
same. I respect your sentiments but the post
reflected the true picture of our great
nation and my soul purpose of this was to
make people aware about where are we going
wrong. I want to appeal everybody to come out
of it and live as a ONE NATION - ONE INDIA !!
Vivek Nanda replied to: Piyali Bunty Chatterjee post - 03rd Sep 2009
9: Vivek,
Thanks for replying. Every day
I see this discrimination is happening. Worst
part is some Bengaleese staying outside
Bengal always discriminates with those who
satys in Bengal. This may be the case with
other states as well. This is the reason why I
always become too sentimental whenever this
topic comes up. Yes what you said (although
for some people it might sound too
idealistic) must be followed. We are Indians
that should be our identity
Piyali Bunty Chatterjee replied to: Vivek Nanda post - 03rd Sep 2009
10: You do talk about Bangalee staying outside
Bengal?....If you are outside your village or
district itself you found the discrimination.
You are being called as an outsider...this
discrimination not only in India, you would
find almost all countries where I
travelled....less in India it seems.....
chandrasekhar nair replied to: Piyali Bunty Chatterjee post - 26th Nov 2009
11: Thanks once again for sharing a thought. I
respect it. What India needs is to attain a
little carefree attitude, a little less
conservative and a little more open
minded.
We should think ourselves as
Indian's first and we have to do our bit to
make it happen. So, lets try n make people
aware about it.

12:As an indian i am always proud t be part of its glorious history, its heritage. but now i do not no whether i belong to india first or to my state first.
if politician are directing us to such a heinious place. arent we responsible for that.
we know its wrong but cant voice it.
in short we are now habitual of blaming our sins to someone else.

13:These are happening because every indian is at fault. Beacuse
1) We do not go & vote sincearly
2) We do not have social responsibility/Discipline
3) We have to unitedly build our systems & country.

15:The problem of the hour is not 'RACISM' but a Race called 'Politicians'. They are the people who divide the innocent common public on the name of 'Language/Religion/Caste' for the sake of earning their daily bread. NEW DELHI RULERS :- Motilal Nehru-JL Nehru-Indira Gandhi-Rajiv-Sonia-Priyanka-Rahul: KASHMIR RULERS : Farooq abdullah-oMAR abdullah: KARNATAKA RULERS : CAN'T NAME THEM for lack of knowledge:) TAMIL NADU RULERS : MGR-JANAKI-JJ-?: Besides them there are several caste leaders (from Ramadoss to Tholthirumavalan). In this so called 'democratic/secular' country (!), to win a decent livelihood, you do not need 'Education/Hard Work' but 'Family back-up/Good Caste background (Either Upper/Lower)/Black money earned through indulging in anti-social activities':

16:Till writing this, there were only five comments.Did u read them?Again diverse opinion from extreme left to extreme right.Like all true Indians we have a face to show to the world at large, and many other faces when we talk about regions, religions, culture, language, politics, urban, rural, desi, mnc and any other basic elements that makes up our living style. The truth is India can not survive with out any of them. Our media is one who keeps these divisions alive. The Indian President is a "marathi" and the PM is a Sardarji, the UPA chairperson is an expatriate naturalised. After the Mumbai massacre on 26/11 the media started counting the victims by their regional basis and declared Mumbaikars were saved by others, when mumbai itself hase majority of "other than maharashtrians".Just before that there were war of words and violence between North Indians and the splinter group of Shiva sena ( damn!!!can't get the name of Raj Thackeray's outfit).

YES, INDIA IS THE MOST RACIAL COUNTRY IN THIS UNIVERSE>

17:I WONT AGREE WITH THIS FULLY.WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET INDIA IS A HUGE COUNTRY WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF RELIGION.IN INDIA RACIAL PROBLEM IS VERY LESS COMPARE TO EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WHERE PEOPLE ARE TREATED LIKE ANIMALS.ABOUT INDIA I CAN SAY ONLY ONE THING INDIA IS A GREAT COUNTRY, WITH FEW BAD POLITICIAN SPOILING THE ENVIRONMENT.RACIAL THING JUST FORGET ABOUT IT.INDIA IS GREAT BOSS.
Posted by: ROSHAN PRAVEEN PINTO - 30th Dec 2008
18:Mr. Pinto, you are totally wrong people in
europe are treated like animals? It is fun to
read. Do you know how many Indians are
working or staying outside India. No country
never treat the people like animals. />
Let me tell you an example,
approx 7million Indians are working in Saudi
Arabia. 97% of the Indians are treated well
and the are paid their basic salary, free
housing, free food, round trip ticket on
completion of contract and and other basic
aminities like sanitation, health etc. are
provided. Ofcourse the tule is strict to
everyone, and discipline is maintained all
walks of life, that makes the life safe and
simple. The place is so safe can travel
anywhere carring huge cash without any
fear...so, dont say anthing without knowing
the fact.

It is sure there
was some incident recently against our Ex
President Mr. Abdul Kalam, and S. Khan
mistreatment in US Airport. That doesnt mean
that all people are treated like animals
except in India.

Our
democractic system is like that without
politician the democracy doesnt work at all.
The basic principle is once the leaders are
elected, they get the liscense to loot the
people and country and there is no option to
the public to withdraw him from the position.
That is our democracy..

Posted by: Pradeep Menon - 30th Dec 2008
21:I think this problem is everywhere. Even in US, a newyorker would joke on ascent of a texan, although its the same language. Coming back to us, its definitely a problem created by politicians but they could do so only because we backed them. Why in last election, BJP couldn't talk much and win on terrorism issue, because we didn't support.

So we all need to change ourselves and educate others and look at things positively rather than getting frustrated on problems, as only +ve force can bring change.
