How Not To Be Drowsy While Studying?

Academic director

Being sleepy is a curse for a curious learner. This is often seen in a scenario where teacher cannot pay attention to every single pupil in a crowd of 50 or more. However, every student might have faced this issue after a heavy lunch or followed by disturbed night. The problem is even intense as the life-turning board exams are approaching. Many students often fail to keep themselves awake while they enter this very important phase because of several reasons. Although the reasons behind not able to keep oneself awaken cannot be generalized as it is a personalized aspect with each one behaving uniquely. Many parents and teachers are ignorant about the fact that forcing kids to study too much is lethal as it can spoil the enthusiasm. However, it is not a sky rocketing science to stay awake and alert.

Let’s see some of the ways we can keep our children motivated and free from being drowsy while they are in front of the books.

Never sit forcefully:

Being completely involved in studies with a self-interest is one of the first thing to be addressed. Unless student is self-motivated and, understand the purpose of the session, none of the tricks could really help in this regard. It is very important to have a positive attitude, and willingness to volunteer by self. Parents and teachers can only do little about this because it is something that a student has to deal within himself or herself. As a teacher, one of the most unacceptable behavior from the students is pretending to be listening while mind is wandering beyond books and school. We all might have observed a scenario where a teacher asked students to go and wash their face in the middle of the most interesting session, in such case the real reason behind the scene must be explored and given a personalized advice for the student. However, in many cases a teacher thinks it is a deliberate act but the reality lies in the attitude and mindset of a student also.

A nap in afternoon is a must

I personally opine that, it is not only advisable to have a nap in the middle of the day but it must be made customary in schools because human brains take sigh of relief if we have a light nap of 20-30 minutes. This is more important if a student has been studying since morning. It is not necessarily like a night`s sleep but a simple nap while leaning in front of a desk or seating on a chair would suffice.

Start moving around

Our body and mind are very well coordinated and they can manage by helping each other during the times of stress. If you feel sleepy, it is advisable to get-off and move around the corridor or outside the classroom or study room. This has been proved by many researchers that, movement is a great energy booster as it not only helps to avoid being sleepy but it improves circulation to brain which consequently have a positive effect on the memory and problem solving abilities.  But remember, no to have a break more than 10 minutes after every 45 minutes of class.

Make your body listen to you

Unless you gain command over your physical being you cannot succeed in the race of education. Some of the ways you need to control over your body is by maintain in a proper posture. Sit upright but remember to be relaxed and as natural as possible. A recent study found that sitting upright or lying down affected the performance by influencing on the working memory of brain. Furthermore, studying in an awkward position can lead to back pain, drowsiness, lethargy and many other health issues. Though it looks awkward, it is advisable to  try standing up for a brief 5 minutes followed by  sitting for more than 45 minutes.  Standing and moving around from time to time not only boost blood circulation but the sleep cycle can be completely broken.

Know what you eat and drink

Never take bulky meals just before sitting to study. It is very important to keep hydrated every 45 minutes because fatigue or sleepiness is sometimes a sign of dehydration which needs to be take care to keep the brain alert. Excess dehydration will not only drain your energy but it may also disrupt cognitive functions which makes studying very difficult. While the quantity and type of fluid preferred depends on personal choice but clean water is the best way to rehydrate. Never forget to eat healthy and balanced meals while avoiding excess of sugars and fats. Caffeine in small quantities does help to stay awake however it is a myth that caffeine can boost our brains ability to improve performance.

Study companion is a plus

While some studies says group studies generally distracts but it depends on the study-mate. If you feel comfortable studying with a buddy who can help and motivate you, it is a great idea to sit together and clarify things however, it depends upon the comfort levels of both.

Never forget to Get a quality night sleep

Normal sleep habits play an important role in elevating day time alertness. Mood, attention, motivation, and memory. All these are crucial to stay active. It is advisable to have at least 7-8 hours of long night sleep however, young children needs even more. Be an early sleeper and early awakener as it can keep a schedule sleep habit that boosts energy and discipline.  All in all, never forget to attend both body and mind. Sleep can be controlled but we must respect our body and mind as they too demands certain freedom. Practicing yoga and meditation can also have some self-control which eventually make us more disciplined when it comes to sleep habits. Eat healthy, drink healthy and live healthy are 3 of the most positive aspects which one need to adapt to ensure we are in control over drowsiness.
