HELPING THE UNDERPRIVILEGED

For too long, there has been a raging debate about extending help through affirmative action to ensure that sections of soceity which has been prevented from getting educational and employment opportunities at par with privileged sections in the higher echelons of the society. Initially thought to be a temporary arrangement, arakshan or reservations have been continuing even today. It started with SC & ST propounded by Dr.Ambedkar for a limited period the list has expanded manifold to include OBC as per Mandal commisison report to which castes are being continually added Marathas for instance are the latest to be added to the list. Critics quote SC judgements and want creamy layer to be outside the benefit of reservation. Proponents argue for proportional representation and say societal backwardness should get precedence over economic backwardness. While I support affirmative action and also scoff at suggestions to limit reservations to 49% when a majority of population demands such provision I wanted to highlight a section of the Brahmin community supposedly the creator of social disparities to their advantage who are underprivileged in the real sense of the word and deserve our sympathies and support.

a Section of our community earns livelihood by attending funeral rites for getting various dhans.  In olden days, in village habitats called agraharams, there were people who were carrying corpses on their shoulders to the burial ground. They were offered various dhans on various days of the rituals following the death. Sabindiharanam is a ritual when the departed soul is allowed from the predhalok to Pithru lok through offerings and prayaschithas.( predha means dead body which will attain rights to enter pithrulok - the world of souls purified only after eloborate rituals) It is believed that human birth takes place due to Paba karma done in a previous birth. We are supposed to follow dharmic path, observe our dharma as ordained in dharmic texts , not commit any paba karma in order to attain salvation so that we do not have re birth.

those who eat on Sabindiharanam belong to the lowest strata of Brahmin society. The higher echelons do nothave marital contacts with them. They are an ostracised lot. They do not have proper education. We are supposed not to see them once they are finished with the acceptance of dhans and the feast. While lots were written about untouchability and the treatment meted out to Dalits, these poor brahmin dalits suffer humiliation and indignation more than any one else. Even the great Kanchi seer Mahaperiyava who did a lot to improve the lots of archakas, Vedic pandits probably did not think it necessary to uplift this section of the community who are denied even basic human needs. It is high time some one advocates for them and get them some privileges through provision of reservation in education and job opportunities.
