LAW AND MOB FURY

Following a gang rape incident in Capital City, citizens have taken to streets on a daily basis protesting against the lack of protection to women in the city which culminated in firing of tear gas shells, use of lathicharge against protestors and use of water canons on them to disperse violent mobs attacking police even while removing barricades. The surge of crowds mostly consisting of college students wanted the Home Minister, the Prime Minister and UPA chairperson Sonia to come out and meet them to hear their legitimate grievance and ensure that the perpetrators are punished swiftly.

The ugly turn of events got severely politicised for even after UPA chairperson and her son met the protestors at their door step and assured of action, even after the Home Minister promised quick trial and even after the PM addressed the nation albeit belatedly, the agitation continues unabated. The protestors are making demands such as removal of Delhi Police Chief, and award of capital punishment to the perpetrators immediately if possible on the lawns of Rashtrapathi Bhavan or India gate where people could see the publich hanging as it happens in Islamic countries following shariat law. The External affairs Minister Salman Kursheed made apoint when he said while he shared the agony and anguish, trials can not be conducted on streets.

The increasing levels of intolence among country's elite and intelligensia citing lack of follow up action every time such a crime is committed is alarming and needs to be checked. Tougher laws need to be made but that will be done by Parliament as it is the supreme body mandated to enact legislations. Sushma Swaraj has called for a special session to discuss the issue and Mayawati has also joined in the demand. Sonia is a person who has been supportive of issues concerning womens' welfare and there is every likelihood of stricter laws being framed. the sociecty has registered its protest. Then it should give time for framing of laws.

Delhi Police has been singularly responsible for saving our nation when a terrorist gang attempted hijacking political leadership during the daring parliament attack case. Several of them laid down their lives. It is another matter that the one of the master minds Afsal Guru is yet to be punished despite his clemency petition having been rejected once.  But that is a political decision on which appropriate action will be taken .

Mob fury is no solution to such social issues.
