A MISSED OPPORTUNITY

There was astonishment when Mamtadidi and Mulayam Bhayaa announted jointly that they just do not accept the names proposed to the office of the President by UPA Chairperson but chose to name three others instead which included the sitting Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan singh. Some in the media saw it a kiteflying exercise jointly done by Sonia and didi to force the PM out of office on his own. That man is made of steel nerves. He was feeling humiliated ,insulted and sulking and looked to the party leadership to defend him as usual whenever he is cornered. The party nevertheless took its own time before declaring that he will be their PM till 2014( a great relief for the nation though) and suddenly took to aggression when Sonia announced Pranabda to the office of the President as UPA Candidate and perhaps if possible a consensus candidate.

Dr.Singh has always expected others to believe that he  is clean and any criticism against him personally or his PMO cronies evokes a strong reaction from this man. When the Anna Brigade wanted initially some 15 of his Ministers be subjected to an independent enquiry PM chose to be silent. But when his name suddently cropped as the one who was lording over Coal Ministry after Shibu Soren was forced to leave he chose to hit back. PMO issued denials as did Raja justifying allotments to Coal blocks instead of auctioning them as being necessitated in national interest as Power plants can not afford the administrative delays. While Raja was booed, PM had a clean and patient hearing by the media. Even the SC is careful not to annoy him. As Jaitley observed contrast this with the role of SC in Pakistan although the context he used was letting of Quotrrochi.

It is an inescapable fact that this Prime Minister had been the worst of all our Prime Ministers despite being hailed as Mr.Clean. He dodged taking decisions by himself which is evident from the fact of numerous Empowered Group of Ministers and Group of Ministers never heard in Indian parliamentary history. PM is fond of addressing international audience on economic theories and likes to speak to business media on reforms, reforms and more reforms. Congress party had a golden opportunity to dump this non performing PM but lacked the will to show the door to this man who has single handedly alienated the party from the masses. Take for instance, his insistence to do the Indo US nuclear deal come what may resulted in Left parties backing out from his UPA-I when Nuclear physcist Amar Singh had to indulge in horse trading to bail his government. 4 years down the line, no serious investment by any MNC in nuclear power industry which feels the nuclear liability bill with 500 crores liability is a hindrance. PM would have loved to do away with this liability clause but the parliament was adamant and some of his sane party colleagues thought otherwise. Had he not driven out leftists, UPA-II need not have wasted many opportunties by begging Mamta didi and threatening Maya and Mulayam with DA cases for eliciting support.

Sonia could have brought in Rahul and elevated both Pranab and Chidambaram as Deputy PM while elevating Dr.Singh to the role of President. A chance has been squandered. Not until UPA-II and especially Congress faces a sweep this will dawn on them Sonia is sanguine about her chances because of divisions in NDA. God bless Sonia.
