BILLS OF SONIA

When Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister, he ordered that the medical bills of Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee who underwent medical treatment in US will be footed by the exchequer even though Atalji was not entitled to these. It was a noble gesture from a noble gentleman from a noble family on a distinguished Indian citizen and Parliamentarian.

After Rajiv’s tragic assassination and a self imposed political exile, Sonia was dragged in to politics by self seekers. When it became increasingly clear that this woman could strike a chord with the millions of Indian  people and could even succeed her husband to the post of PM all canards were planted in the media by vested interests. Dr.Swamy the ever green shooter below the belt in Indian politics led the brigade ruling out the possibility of Sonia ever getting a chance to be PM. It is another matter that he chose to topple Atal Behari in the company of Jayalalitha offering Sonia to present her credentials which was blocked by SP Chief Mulayam singh. RSS backed economist turned ideologue and man who has penchant to settle business family feuds Gurumurthi wrote a series of articles in Indian express as to how Sonia is disqualified to be our PM. He alleged that Sonia sought asylum in Italian embassy following proclamation of internal emergency in 1975, that she refused Indian citizenship till Rajiv was made PM. He questioned the patriotism of Sonia and her children as well in typical RSS style who have taken patent rights over patriotism. When it became clear that Sonia could indeed take oath, canards were spread that then President Kalam was against it ( he cleared this much later) and Sushma Swaraj by far the most beautiful Indian politician swore to wear widows’ robes and tonsure her head if that were to happen. Sonia saved this ignominy when she refused to become PM and anointed Dr MMS.

This time around, Sonia was made the chairperson of National Advisory council in the rank of a Cabinet  minister .  The mandate of NAC was to act as a conduit between the party and the   government , advising the Government on a plethora of issues. RTI, MNRGES, food security bill are some of the path breaking legislations in the social sector which were actively pursued by Sonia.  People then suddenly found the Office of Profit controversy which was used to unseat Jaya Bachchan. The legislation brought by Parliament sought to exclude the office of chairperson of NAC which was returned by the then President. Sonia took the bold step of resigning as member of Parliament , sought a re election and rode back to Parliament like a lioness. Even today all the ills of the government are laid before 10 Janpath while MMs gets a favorable media verdict.

Narendra Modi fancies himself as a tall leader of national consequence following his successive triumphs in Gujarat.the fact is Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Raman Singh have done much better than him on governance issues. Modi suddenly picks up a vernacular daily report which claims that Government had spent 1880 crores on Sonia’s medical bills as revealed by an RTI activist. The said RTI activists denied this and Modi then claimed he was interested in the amount spent by the Government. PMO denied having paid any of her bills while admitting that expenses to Belgium were indeed paid by government amounting to less than Rs.3 lacs,.

As NAC chairperson enjoying a cabinet minister rank, Sonia is entitled to certain privileges. What is wrong if Government foots the bill? After Rajiv demitted office, media was agog on the expenditure incurred on Rajiv’s security through SPG following which VP Singh downscaled his security level. Rajiv paid his life to this uncharitable act. Today every lap dog of former PM, CM and     to people like Jayalalitha who are perceived to be under security threat are extended  SPG cover. These  are not at all protested. India has become a rich country suddenly that it can afford such high level of VIP security.

The rotten minds of opposition in raking up non issues like medical bills of Sonia are a sad commentary on the standard of politics that our netas have brought on this nation.
