CRUCIFIXION OF NEHRU

India's First Prime Minister Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru is credited with the undeniable title of most popular Prime Minister and the man who built a resurgent India. No doubt his stint of Prime Mininstership had its own shortcomings such as the internationalisation of Kashmir dispute - necessitated by his trusted aide VK Krishnamenon's intransigence and the humiliating defeat at the hands of China in 1962. Some of those who are opposed to dynastic politics also charge Nehru for having acquiscesced Indira Gandhi's appointment as AICC President in early 1950s which saw a democractically elected Communist Government headed by EMS being  dismissed.

BJP is having a last ditch effort to capture power at the centre and has annointed one of most divisive politician in Independent India, Sri Narendra Modi as their chosen leader if they were to form a government. This protege of RSS with humble beginings as a Chaiwala( his own assertion and I do not mean to disgrace him) has started giving hate speeches wherever he addresses and he has kicked up a raging controversy about the kind of India if Patel had been our first PM instead of Nehru. Historians have rebuffed his bluff and has substantially contradicted his claims of open enmity between the two stalwarts. His Guru Advani who was sulking till the other day has found new ways to promote Patel at the cost of denigrating Nehru claims that Nehru was ambivalent in employing military to tame Nizam quoting from a Malayalam story written by a former Diplomat. The story claimed that Nehru called Patel Communal. It is true both of them were having differences with regard to treating Hindu militancy. Patel was eager to broker peace between RSS,and the then Government and but for his intervention, RSS would have remained a banned organisation ever since Godse killed Mahatma. Again Patel and Rajendra Prasad wanted to rebuild Somnath temple devastated byGhazni using state funds which Nehru refused.

In a TV show anchored by Karan Thapar, Chandan Mitra, BJP spokesman and editor of Pioneer was unequivocal in condemning Nehru for all our ills. BJP has not called Nehru a traitor yet which may follow soon. Some of the panelists like Shashi Tharoor shared the criticism of Neruvian socialist policies. What MO Mathai did to Nehruvian memories in his reminiscences of Nehru age, these people repeat in TV channels. IF Sardar Patel was instrumental in accession of princely states to Indian Union, Nehru was certainly the man who gave shape and ideological unity to the nation.

His mixed economy gave us vast conglemerates of Industry in Public sector and till his last breath he cared for the common man. The Modern temples of India as Nehru called them has created economic benefits to the country, created large scale employment for millions of people. Nehru has always conducted himself with impeccable manners and unimpeachable integrity. He always treated opposition with the respect it deserved despite being an unchallenged monarch inpolitical arena for decades. BJP's ploy to den his image with false hood has a larger agenda of polarising India. People need to be watchful
