WAGES OF HONESTY

There was much media hype over the recent expansion and reshuffule of cabinet under taken by Prime Minister with consultations involving Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi proclaimed to be a refurbishing exercise to end a supposed policy paralysis. It was however a dumbsquib essentially done to ease out a honest minister who had the temerity to with stand a mighty corporate house in India. As The Hindu observed, Mr.Jaipal Reddy stood his ground amidst intense lobbying by Ambani Sr. to oblige his group companies in the battle vis-a vis Ministry of Petroluem and Gas. Reddy's predecessor Murli Deora is a bosom friend of Ambanis and the conflict of interest was obvious. Reddy refused to revise gas prices upwards for Godavari
Basin find D-6 oil wells despite PMO's intervention and people like Ahuluwalia openly lobbying for a price rise midway through even though contractually the prices can not be revised till 2014. The Minister also compelled RIL to agree to a CAG audit of its accounts much against their wishes using a residuary provision in Production sharing contract.  Ambanis never expected such a tough stand by the Ministry and were lobbying to ease him out of the Ministry. Reddy could have been removed at any other pretext even engaging in Telengana trouble shooting. But that would have been obvious to all . I suspect that the entire ministerial making is to ease him out of the ministry.

Reddy had no complaints as of now as if nothing has happened when he had been shunted out of the high profile ministry to an obscure ministry.

RIL has again succeeded in enforcing its will on a democratically elected Government even though it is claimed it is the Prime Minister's prerogative to nominate or remove ministers. To shift a peforming minister with high level of integrity requires enormous courage unless there has been compelling reasons of a hidden quid pro quo.It is this act which exposes the UPA-II Government and lends credence to claims by IAC and Arvind Kejriwal that this government is steeped in corruption and perhaps the worst ofall Government in Independent India. TINA factor has been helping them to stay afloat but blatant misdeeds and abuse of power will be potentially damaging for Sonia Gandhi and her party. She better watch out. Once again Corporate houses have started setting the agenda for governance which is not good for our democracy
