Broadband & IPTV Report Card!

This Tuesday, Broadband forum announced the latest broadband & IPTV statistics, which shows the impressive growth in face of global recession. The report says that global broadband grew by 16.6 million lines in Q1-09, while IPTV subscriber base approached 24 million, with expansions mainly in Europe & North America. Total numbers of broadband lines are about 429.2 million with approximately 20 countries grew by 10% or more in last quarter. Both eastern & western Europe has shown impressive growth; while West Europe has just over 108 million lines, Eastern Europe reached to fig of 23.5 million lines.

Among top 10 broadband countries, China tops the chart with 88 million broadband lines closely followed by USA with 83 million lines. The list is mainly dominated by European countries, USA, Japan & Korea with only exception of China & Brazil.

About IPTV, Europe shows 56.2% y-o-y growth in IPTV segment, while it grew by 10% compared to last quarter. Eastern Europe is aggressively rolling out IPTV with new services across region including Poland & Russia. While Western Europe leads the tally of number of IPTV lines, followed by North America, South-East Asia & Asia-Pacific.

Broadband Technology Market share

In terms of technology, DSL is the most popular medium of broadband access followed by cable. Interesting point is that, fiber is catching up fast with market share of around 12.4% at number three position in terms of market share. Wireless broadband has to go long way, as its market share stood meager 1.3%; though it is growing at faster pace, from one million lines to total 5.58 million lines.
