Affordable education options in India

In spite of India’s rich cultural heritage where Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of learning is worshipped, education still remains unaffordable to a majority of the population. Despite having attained independence in 1947, the social gap between the rich and the poor has only widened. Affordable education has remained a dream for most Indians particularly in rural areas. This is indeed a very sad situation even though the Indian constitutional framework regards secondary education a fundamental right.
However, things have been changing and government’s measures to make education affordable are reaping good results. Government schools are revamping their infrastructure and other educational facilities making it under the reach of the poor. Subsidized tuition fee are a part of this plan. Schools run by NGOs have also been providing affordable primary and secondary education to students. On the other hand, central schools affiliated to CBSE have been offering education facilities at relatively low cost. Most of the State-affiliated (SSC) schools also provide education at lower prices compared to their counterparts in ICSE and IGCSE schools.
Though Higher education has become more expensive, there are also affordable options, thanks to education academies that allow students to study at home while pursuing their graduate programs through distance education. As foreign education is getting popular, academies also assist students who wish to join postgraduate programs abroad. Specific packages have been designed for such students to support their accommodation and educational requirements at low prices. On the other hand, major banks in India have been providing education loans at low interest rates so as to promote education and bring it under the reach of the common man.
