A catchy title that - i hope- will prime the web surfers to at least have a look into this blog. However, this is not the (only) reason for inking down my thoughts. Over the last decade i have been involved in teaching the post-graduation students (PGPM/MBA) in various colleges (leading as well as Tier 1/11). Apart from the unending enthusiasm, grit, determination, willingness to take risks, vigour, valour of the students what has really surprised me is that the lack of employable skills that most of these students have. It is also quite astonishing that whilst selecting a college to do a PG, students often tend to do a lot of primary as well as secondary research to ensure that the right selection is made. Some of the factors often considered are- location, faculty, course curriculum, alumni, legacy, ranking amongst peers, and fees structure amongst many other parameters. One of the most important criteria’s however is the 'placements ‘offered and accepted the previous year along with the portfolio of company’s that have come to hire.

Unknowingly potential students often judge and record 'employability' amongst the top 3 reasons to select an institution in their imaginary scale. But why is it that we do still see the struggle in placements and how can students take charge of their career rather than depend on any institution to find a placement. It is my humble effort to outline a few key variables that students can choose to imbibe while in school that will help them move themselves up the employability ladder

1. Learn, Adapt and Change : Its not only about grades!!! though important , it is important that you continually learn from the happenings around you- previous placements, roles hired for etc. When you are in the first year ensure that you collate all the Job Descriptions and Job roles that have been published for your seniors. Try to figure out the key competencies that these roles look for- have a plan to learn these skills, behaviours and attitudes. Adapt to these changes the industry is looking for by continually applying these ASK in your day to day activities. If there is a delta between your current skills and the required ones-change your approach.

2. Self- Awareness: Be aware of your capabilities- you will astound yourself if you know what you are capable of. There is a tremendous possibility that you will often come across your friends, teachers, family asking you to çlone'yourself like someone else (presumably successful in their eyes)- please take this advice with a pinch of salt- In my opinion- being self-aware of your capabilities, strengths and development areas is critical- plan a career based on your strengths and not on someone else’s. It is often best if you could make a career in an area that you are good at rather than trying to emulate someone else in their core competency. Just imagine if Tendulkar was advised to play hockey or become a doctor instead of pursuing cricket- his core are of strength.

3. Dream: Do you dream? If yes, do you dream BIG?. This may sound philosophical- there are no statistical evidences for this- but, i have come across people who dream and dream big and this makes them do everything in their life knowingly or unknowingly towards achieving their dreams. Dream BIG in college and share your dreams with everyone around you- do not hesitate to do this as people around you will soon start to partake in your dreams. Do enough (reading, practicing and exposing yourself) to get closer to your dreams. Make sure that whatever you choose to do- choice of electives, volunteering etc. are baby step towards achieving your dreams.
