College and University teachers should retire not before 65

Chairperson Post Graduate Dept
It is a big debate all over the country that the superannuation age for teacher should be changed to 65 and the UGC has also made a recommendation in this regard . There is justification for that . Teachers of Schools and other employees of govt organisation get their job much early in their life. Secondly, their type of work is best done before the age of 60. The freshers do better jobs in Banks and administration. But this is not so with teachers of higher education institutions. They grow wiser with their age. Usually , a teacher gets a job in a college or university not before 35. They have to complete Ph.D. and Post doc studies for getting selected. They should get time for serving the institutes till 65. Today higher education institutes require good and qualified teachers. But such teachers are retiring at the age of 60. There is a dearth of experienced teachers. In Science and technology as well as Medical or Literature subjects teachers are to be allowed to work till the age of 65 and the UGC recommendation should be accepted without any hesitation. Earlier it was the Left Front Government of West Bengal misguided the Centre that if the teachers in College and University are given extension to  retire at 65, then other employees will also make the same claim. This is simply an absurd argument. The teaching job in college and university cannot be equated with other jobs in any way. An army officer retires at an earlier age. A government official is selected at the age of 25. A Bank clerk gets job much earlier than his 25 years of age. But this does not happen in the case of a college or University teacher. In a research institute teachers should get such extension.
