Well the triangular dance as someone called it included India, China and the US. The 3 nations which will consume most of the world’s resources and which will command most of the services and manufacturing sector. When the dance was designed the triangle chosen was an equilateral triangle.
With China’s continuing bureaucracy (not that India doesn’t have it), the side between India and the US is getting shorter. Which means, bad news for China and terrific news for India. That is the reason why Left parties tried hard to block the nuclear deal. That is the reason why left parties oppose anything foreign especially anything US.
After many years of fervent lobbying and deal-making in China, American media companies have little to show for their efforts there and are increasingly shifting their attention instead to India (New York Times)
Not the same thing with India. There are many firsts, which are happening in the past 2 years giving India its rightful place on the geo-political map. These 2 things signal the trend :
1. The nuclear deal : Bush went out of his way to make the deal happen. Singh made sure that left does not spoil the party with some shrewd politics. The deal later will become the Bush-Sing legacy. Needless to say it has opened up a $100 bn industry.
2. Slumdog Millionaire : A film shot in India on India swept the Oscar’s. A growing indication that India’s time has come on the global scene. How can one justify an Oscar for A.R Rahman’s score in Slumdog when his other movie scores were way better? Take his first movie Roja and compare that with Slumdog. I cannot think of any other reason other than the US getting cozy with India. Can you?
The message from the US is this: “We know India is not George W. Bush’s cat but a country with 1.2 billion population whose middle class surpass the population of the US”
There is also a theory of counter-balancing in Asia. The US is using India to counter-balance China for a balanced world. Be it China’s bureaucracy or America’s counter-balancing strategy, India will reap the benefits
