 Application of simple calculation methods helps us solving various problems efficiently.

 A wide variety of problems can be formulated mathematically and solved by finding the maximum or minimum value of a particular quantity. Few examples of such quantities are : lowest cost, maximum yield, minimum material required, largest area etc.

 While dealing with such type of problems first step becomes identification of such quantity and designing formula to express such quantity in functional form .

 In order to find maximum and minimum points find the values of the independent variable for which the derivative of the function is zero.

 Use standard formula to find derivative of the function if the function is in equation form.If it is in tabular form use interpolation formulas to find derivatives.

 Substitute the values of independent variable for which derivative becomes zero in the original function to obtain corresponding maximum and minimum.

 Calculation of second derivative at each value of the independent variable that corresponds to a maximum or minimum shows negative value for maximum and positive for minimum.
