DEGREE ONLY? A GOOD JOB ENTAILS MORE THAN AN MBA DEGREE

An MBA has long been held a prerequisite of giving one’s career a boost. An uncountable number of MBA graduates are being produced every year and aspirants are growing a hundred-fold. Management institutes, too, are mushrooming all over the country and the MBA bug has bitten India like never before. However, with the global economic downturn and limited job opportunities, is it just the degree that guarantees a good job?
Many hold that the institute matters most, as these enter into agreements with top companies. So an MBA from a reputed institute stands a better chance of landing a good job.
For admission to a reputed institute however, good grades in the CAT/MAT are essential.
According to Goutam Ganguly, delivery manager, NIIT Technology, “There are enlisted colleges for every organisation and this does limit the selection process to a certain extent. However, what goes in favour of a candidate is the ability to communicate, work in groups and an attitude to learn and absorb. Extracurricular activities also earn brownie points.”
With the industrial growth rate improving, there will soon be a huge demand for managers in every business field. A well-rounded personality is what companies require and
this involves a mix of confidence, creativity, dynamism, skill, leadership ability and knowledge.
Sanjay Chatterjee, senior vice president, sales, Zee Bangla, said, “The candidate needs to have good communication skills and above all he/she needs to be presentable. First impressions are lasting ones in the business world so it all depends how well you package yourself.”
Domain knowledge is also important. Biswadip Gupta, joint managing director and CEO, JSW Bengal Steel Limited, said, “An MBA degree is just an entry but domain knowledge is very important. Candidates must have a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, team spirit and strong domain knowledge. More importantly, he/she should have a strong and eager pair of hands.”
Future MBA’s take note; academic flair and a good job don’t necessarily go hand in hand.
Utpal Chatterjee, professor, soft skills and head of placements, IISWBM, said, “The ability to respond simultaneously to situations is very important. MBA students should also brush up on their soft skills as these are given priority in top-notch organisations. Always remember that companies want to know you as a person above all else.”
Indeed, leadership is the need of the hour for India Inc. and MBA graduates have a big role to play in its growth and development.
In short, walk the extra mile!
