Career in BIOTCHNOLOGY

Business Development
Biotechnology is recognized as a discipline where basic and applied science are working together hand in hand several basic scientific discipline like physics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics and engineering have an interface with biotechnology. The primary objective of biotechnology is to develop products and processes / technologies whose large scale application result in societal benefits in the sectors of health, agricultural, animal resources development, aquaculture, energy environment and forests and industry. This discipline of technology got special attention in the planning in India when the Government of India set up a separate department of Biotechnology in 1986.

Majors areas of study and work

Agricultural and animal Husbandry: ‘Micropropagation’ is a technique used to grow crops that are identical in form and quality. Tissue cultural is also practiced to help agriculturist produce an abundant supply of better-testing and more nutritious food with minimum use of chemical pesticides. Here you could also be developing disease resistant plants, vegetable and flower with longer lives and working on innovation that could triple crop yield, without additional formland.

Environment: Control of industrial air pollution, waste and effluent treatment are major areas of work for biotechnologies. Biotech firms also recycle sewage slugged, figure out microbial treatment for oil spills and toxic waste
Industry: Biotechnologists here are involved in energy production and conservation, chemical processes, textile development, cosmetics genetic engineering. Bioinformatics is an emerging branch of a biotechnology that has come up recently. It mainly involves the use of software to utilize information from the vast biological database that is vast developed by experienced Biotechnologist in India , the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is a prominent institution doing research in this field. Genetic engineering and microbiology are other offshoots of biotechnology and involve a lot of work in the R&D laboratories .
Health care: Biotechnologist develops new and advanced pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and vaccines. They strive to find quicker techniques for genetically inherited ailments.

Education Biotechnology
To promote deveolpment in various areas of biotechnology, government of India, had evolved model System of postgraduate teaching in biotechnology in cooperation with UGC and Jawaharlal Nehru university for initiating M.Sc. programme in this multi – discipline area. The programme is designed to expose the student to recent exciting development in the area of genetic engineering and their exploitation in industry, agricultural and medicine.
Jawaharlal nehru university new Delhi holds a combined entrance examination for admission for two years M.sc programme in biotechnology for al the participating universities namely :

University of Allahabad, Allahabad
Annamalai university, Tamil Nadu
