Comment from TPM Team : Unsafe Activities
: While carrying out welding activities on the overhead oil lines nearby refinery plant, free trespass was noticed underneath the welding activities. Although barricade was in place, it was not so effective due to its excess height.
Our TPM team conducts audit every week. Most of the week , we identify the difficulties as a problem and formulate action plan to solve them. During the audit, some people were just crossing the road without considering the barricade. Many sounds regarding this were heard. The owner of that area whispers , “If unskilled people are selected for the plan operation, the situation will remain the same.” I couldn't control myself. I then just asked what was the standard or source of this kind of barricade. He just dared on me and I tried to convince TPM Head that it was communication error.
Communication means transfer of message from one source to another by any method i.e. verbal, directional, signatory , through light or any communication medium. Many times, it happens that the communicator thinks that he has done his job thoroughly but the receiver is unable to interpret it . Therefore, attention is required if the communication is not followed. We should always use international kind of standard and to be taken care of the mass to whom , it has to be communicated.
I again remember the morning of the same day when my subordinate informed me, “Not even a single red tag has been solved in this week.” I was surprised but kept calm which I usually am not able to do. I called him and asked to show me the Red Tag Register. To my utter surprise, I found that the date of solution of Red Tag was written wrongly as 05/06/07/08/--02 (that is month of February ), instead of 05/06/07/08/--03 (that is month of March). After correcting this, there was huge solution for this week. Although, here again there was a slip of pen but had it been communicated to the TPM Team, it might have worsened the condition.
Many problems of the factory can be solved by proper communication only.
