Genetically Modified Seeds consumer - a new Generation
Then, we forgot.
WIll New India consume Genetically Modified Seeds ( read, Okhra, Brinjal, Rice.. et all) without knowing she is eating something different from what her parents used to?
Nature has given us plants that do not seek anything in return, not even water. One simply has to cast the seed and in time reap a nutritious harvest. These are hardy genes, evolved over centuries. It is important that these crops of truth are protected from the profiteers.
Truth is, no one in the urban setup knows the difference. One goes to the supermarket, picks stuff available off the shelf readily, and thats that.
Whoever controls our seeds, controls the food supply. About 4 top seed companies are at work to maximise profits by promoting laws and technologies that eliminate the practice of farmer-saved seeds. Whether it's promoting genetic seed sterilisation and patent laws, or dictating trade regimes, these trends threaten traditional farming communities and erode crop diversity.
The natural genetic diversity of crops is a vital insurance against future farming catastrophes. The world needs to retain as many different varieties of potato, tomato, rice and wheat as possible in case the commercial varieties grown in bulk get diseased, or are rendered useless by the accelerating impacts of global warming.
What may be our role/ responsibilty towards saving the earth from dangerous "Terminators" in the form of cancer-causing seeds, superweeds, and other catastrophe of mammoth proportions?
Any thoughts on this are welcome.
