Important elements when we install Intel driver in windows 98SE
Intel is the leader of motherboard chipset and CPU in current market. The Intel motherboard chipset with their CPU obtains great comments from users in terms of stability, bug and other aspects. Because of “winter union”, Microsoft’s Windows series operation supports Intel chipset so well and there is nearly no patch at all besides normal Intel driver. However, do you know that there are some special but indispensable elements that we have to install to ensure normal system functions when we installing Intel drivers in windows? Ok, we talk about this here. ;)
Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
Windows 98SE was released very early so now it’s impossible to recognize the Intel main i8 xx series chipset group. But we can install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility driver to make the system recognize the devices and use their functions correctly. If we didn’t install this driver, the operating system won’t know anything about the chipset group and the surrounding devices so that it couldn’t run the features to the fullest. Just take the display and graphics for example, the worst result can be that we can’t use the AGP Bridge (AGP Bridge integration is in the middle of the Memory Controller Hub, it is the communication bridge between AGP graphics and motherboard). If AGP Bridge function isn’t on, the chart subsystem’s whole function will be reduced.
Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver
We install Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver mainly to control and manage the transmission specification that IDE controller controls the ATA 66/100 device. Besides allowing operating system to recognize the 82801BA IDE controller, this control program is the key to open DMA (Direct Memory Access) function in windows 98SE. In default status, DMA transmission mode is closed in Windows 98SE even though your IDE device supports DMA transmission mode.
IAA(Intel Application Accelerator)
Intel claims that this Application Accelerator can not only reduce 10%-20% starting time of the system but also accelerate 5%-10% execution efficiency. As a strengthened IDE controller Intel driver, it is suitable for ICH2 or newer versions of I/O Control HUB. This chip is included mainly in i9xx chipset group which is to say, most of the Intel 8xx chipset motherboard users can improve the system functions free. What’s more, Pentium 4 system users can obtain a lot of good from this accelerator driver too.
DirectX
Since hardware update all the time, currently main graphics card supports Direct 7, DirectX8 and DirectX9, but obviously we can make full use of the DirectX 6.1 that comes with Windows 98SE. As DirectX is the basis of graphics driver program, we should install DirectX before we install the graphics card driver.
Other device driver programs
One thing we should note is that some old driver programs will cover the system or DirectX files and make them old too thus leading to abnormal device functions (for example when installing old Intel motherboard driver, the AC’ 97 sound card may not have sound any more) and we need to reinstall the DirectX to fix this kind of issue.
