LINEN FOREVER............FOREVER
LINEN – even predates the invention of the wheel!
BIRTH OF LINEN
When Pre-Historic man decided that fur & skins were no longer the height of fashion, he turned to the fibers of the Flax plant to create the first ever fabric. It was probably the Egyptians who first organized the industrial production of linen, recognizing it as a noble fabric. Linen became a luxury worn by royal households & other aristocracy.
Linen probably came to Ireland in early Christian times. It was the Irish, who popularized linen world over & Saint Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland, is said to be buried in a shroud of Linen. The production of Linen continued through the Middle Ages, but it was not until the 17th Century that the industry started to develop in a structured way, initially under the guidance of the Earl of Stafford & the Duke of Or monde.
In 1949,Jaya Shree Textiles, an unit of Indian Rayon & Industries ltd, The Aditya Birla Group Company took the first initiative to bring this nature’s gift, spinning into world class weaving & finishing plant. The yarn is spun, woven & processed by importing French & Belgian Flax fibre. The Plant is still the only facility for Linen spinning in the sub-continent with State-Of-The-Art-Technology.
AMAZING LINEN
• The Ancient Egyptians believed that Linen was a gift of God & regarded it as sacred. Linen was used in holy ceremonies & it was the only fabric which leaders of worship were allowed to wear next to their skin. It symbolized cleanliness & purity.
• Linen was widely used by Pharaohs and other nobility.
• Linen was also used extensively in the mummifying process, beside gold, as it helped to preserve the dead body, thus ensuring that the deceased’s spirit remained immortal.
• In Ancient Celtic times, Linen was spun in an anti-clockwise direction as it was believed that this gave mystical powers which brought the wearer good fortune.
• Leviticus warns against undermining the inherent purity of Linen by mixing it with other fibers stating “Neither shall a garment mingled of Linen and Woolen come upon thee”. Today, it’s still against belief to mix sacred linen & synthetic.
• Recently scientists discovered cutting of Linen preserved in British Museum, which were woven 6000 years ago is structurally still as perfect as today’s Linen. Thus Linen has the ability to resist the march of ‘Time’. Secondly, germs do not affect Linen.
• Legend has it that Cleopatra, after her daily aromatic bath, would rest in a bed full of Linen pillows filled with flaxseed, since it would not aggravate her delicate, alabaster-like skin & body.
• The word ‘spinster’ meaning single woman comes from the day when flax was still spun on spinning wheels by spinsters. This was skilled work & single woman who had mastered the art were at a distinct advantage when looking for a suitable husband. Single woman were encouraged to sit outside to spin where they could be admired by potential suitors as they passed by. As a result the word gradually became associated with single woman.
• Pure Linen sheets are a sensible luxury – a well-woven set will last your entire lifetime, and you will leave them to a favored heir in your will as so many Anglo-Saxon women did.
• “Flaxen hair beauty”, comes from the beauty of the flax fibre which looks like golden hair.
PROCESSING LINEN
The Linen manufacturing process is complicated and requires great skill at each stage of production. There are many processes involved in turning Flax to Fabric.
CULTIVATING FLAX
Linen is a natural fabric produced from fibers of the Flax plant. The plant is sown in April, produces delicate blue flowers in June & is harvested in August. After pulling, the crop is laid out in the fields to ret, a process where the woody bark of the plant is naturally rotted so that the fibers come loose from the main stem.
TREATING FLAX FIBRE & SPINNING INTO LINEN YARN
The fibers are hackled (combed) to separate the long line and short tow fibers. The line fibers are generally drafted and doubled, and then lightly twisted before undergoing a wet spinning process. This produces strong, fine yarn, which is further cleaned-up electronically and passed through splicer for knot-free yarn. The entire process is with European technique.
WEAVING LINEN YARN INTO LINEN FABRIC
Weaving is an ancient craft which has been revolutionized by technology. The latest Computer Aided Design systems & electronically controlled Swiss machines, ensures flawless fabric woven into many weaves, designs and textures.
FINISHING LINEN TO CREATE TEXTURE OR PURPOSE
Dyeing and finishing Linen is a complicated process, and new techniques are continually being developed to give bright colours. Different finishing treatments can produce the crisp or softer elegance of a fine Linen to meet the demands of the fashion industry for new textures & performance. Recent developments in finishing include softwash & roto finishes, Flexa compacting for dimension stability, for a relaxed look and easy care finishes which cut down Linen’s crushability & allow the fabric to be fully washable & tumble-dry friendly. Shearing the fabric gives it a clean look.
FRIENDS OF NATURE
Features
• Higher moisture absorption capacity, almost double than cotton, makes it a thirsty fabric
• Linen allows the skin to breathe, and is extremely comfortable under all weather conditions. Cool in summer & warm in winter and refreshed in humid weather.
• Linen helps to protect the skin from harmful ultra-violet rays.
• Natural Anti bacterial – Health Fabrics.
• With repeated washings, the fabric attains new sheen & airiness which makes it even more skin friendly.
• Extremely durable & wear resistant.
• Naturally Anti-static hence repels dust.
• Pure Linen influences the lowering of muscle tensions.
• Extremely soft & supple, hence enhanced body comfort.
LOOK
• Retains the crease and wrinkles due to the individual body movements of the wearer.
• It adapts easily to any lifestyle or occasion, whether for daily or special, formal or informal use.
• Wrinkles of Linen have its own way of expressions. Linen is tough, resistant & nearly immortal.
• It has a natural sheen & extraordinary texture, which differentiates with other fabrics.
NATURAL/ ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY
The inherent properties of Linen & its manufacture are “eco-friendly” because:
• Flax is a renewable resource, grown for centuries.
• Every part of the Flax plant has value, eliminating nearly any waste.
• Flax is easy to incorporate into modern crop rotation cycles.
• Growing Flax requires little fertilizer or pesticides ( 3 times less than wheat & 13 times less than potatoes for instance )
• The inherent strength of Linen yarn reduces the need for applied coatings. Linen is fully biodegradable & is now commonly recycled.
