How techies rate their bosses..?

Ever wondered how the employees of the world's top companies rate their bosses, their work environment, salaries, etc? Now, you have a place to find out -- Glassdoor.com.

The site Glassdoor.com, which went live this week, allows users to anonymously rate their CEO, write reviews about their company and check salary information. As the site's mantra goes: An inside look at companies from those who know them best.

Glassdoor works on several levels, combining elements from companies such as Jobster, PayScale and JobVent. However, where Glassdoor differs is that it aims to provide a more granular, inside look at the culture, leadership and salaries of a select job within a select company.

The site presently has more than 3,300 reviews on about 250 companies, the majority of which are from the high-tech field. For example, the site so far has approximately 129 reviews about Microsoft where employees have rated the work environment. In another review, the employees have rated their top bosses including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Google's Eric Schmidt.

Glassdoor is led by chief executive Robert Hohman, formerly president of Hotwire.com and engineering team leader at Expedia.com, and Board Chairman Richard Barton, who is also chief executive at real estate site Zillow.

The two had previously worked together at Microsoft and then Expedia, which Barton founded in 1994. Expedia ultimately transformed travel by opening up information once available only to travel agents and insiders. Barton then went on to transform real estate with the launch of Zillow.com, allowing anyone to find and research home values from their personal computer.

Glassdoor is backed with $3 million from Benchmark Capital, which plans to make money from online advertising. Since Glassdoor's goal is to go threadbare on salary and other employee morale issues, the company officials reportedly admit that some companies have expressed "an initial level of discomfort" with the idea.

However, CEO Hohman said that companies "very rapidly go to the benefits for themselves," noting that some could use it as a recruiting tool or a way to identify potential problems in the organisation.

However, Glassdoor is not the first employer-rating site, other similar sites include JobValues and PingMyCompany, as well as Revyr, which is still in beta testing.
