HP is acquiring California based cyber security firm.

HP is acquiring San Mateo, California based cyber security firm Fortify Software in an attempt to bolster its application security offerings.

Fortify Software specializes in software that protect companies from the threats posed by security flaws in software applications.

The computer and server maker is buying the vulnerability specialist for an undisclosed sum.

HP said that upon the deal's closure, it will run Fortify initially as a standalone entity targeting the security market. Fortify will be integrated over time into the HP Software and Solutions business and Fortify's products will become part of HP's business technology optimization application portfolio.

The company said that with this acquisition, it will provide a complete offering that helps organisations reduce business risk, meet compliance regulations and protect against malicious application attacks.

Earlier, HP and Fortify have collaborated on security analysis technology Hybrid 2.0 that followed previous work in June 2009.
