Golden boy's Olympian business plan

Account Manager

When Abhinav Bindra hit bull’s-eye on Monday morning, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Once the golden shooter is back from Beijing, he will train his eyes back on a rather bullish business.

The young entrepreneur’s father AS Bindra has already thought an apt name for the new five-star hotel project he and his son plan to launch in about three months from now. “We will call it Olympian,” the senior Bindra told ET over the phone from his home in Panchkula near Chandigarh. Elated at his son’s outstanding feat, he said: “Abhinav owns a land worth Rs 150 crore in Chandigarh. We are in talks with a few investors. But construction should commence after about three months.”

The ace shooter is no stranger to business. He is CEO of Abhinav Futuristics, a new company that the family set up to deal in mobile solutions, computer game controllers, and is also the sole agent for Germany’s Walther brand of weapons in India. Futuristics has a large clientele in the police department. But now it targets GeNext with a range of PC game peripherals, chess computers, etc. The company’s current annual revenues are close to Rs 25 crore and the Bindras are aiming at a Rs 100-crore plus top line by 2010. “Which means, Abhinav will have his hands full from now on,” says the senior Bindra.

Says Ogilvy and Mather India president and national creative director Piyush Pandey: “This medal would give him a fantastic platform in the world of business. He will become a brand; a recognisable face. It will now depend on him as to how he utilises it.” In the past, only cricketers have been able to trade their success in sports for business. Former captain Kapil Dev did it well to launch successful restaurants and a stadium lighting business.
