Healthiest restaurants in India

MCA Student

We got a battery of nutritionists, chefs, culinary critics and restaurateurs to pick the 10 healthiest restaurants in India, so you can order without fear.

PURE

Mumbai

Pure is India's only organic restaurant thus it must be on the Men's Health list. Painstakingly put together by celebrated American chef Michel Nischan (now famous for his restaurant with Paul Newman), few know the history behind the chef 's love for organic food. Despite Pure's limited appeal, it is impressive how it has stuck to its basics of serving the freshest and healthiest foods available. A must-try here is the very healthy Himalayan Trout, recommends Karen.

HALDIRAM'S

New Delhi, NCR, Rajasthan

The tiny shop from Bikaner has now become a vegetarian fast-food favourite all over North India and has also reached foreign shores. The healthiest dish here has to be the unique Raj Kachori. It's made of sprouts and dahi and is nutritious.

CHINA KITCHEN/CHINA HOUSE

Delhi, Mumbai

This five-star restaurant seems set to alter the image unhealthy Chinese grub enjoys. They use only olive oil and the chicken's own natural juices to prepare the Lemon Chicken Even the pasta is wholewheat and cooked in a natural tomato base gravy.

MINI MUGHAL

New Delhi

After the owner of Mini Mughal had a heart attack, he made some prompt changes to the menu to make the food lighter. The butter chicken is made with skimmed milk cream instead of full cream and white butter is used instead of ordinary butter.

ITALIA

New Delhi/Bangalore

The restaurant that noted food writer Vir Sanghvi calls 'the best Italian restaurant in the country' serves India's healthiest pizzas as well. The Salad Pizza comes with a superthin crust and is topped with green salads and baby tomatoes.

CAPERBERRY

Bangalore

Since we do molecular gastronomy, there is a big constitution of salad caprese that I favour at Caperberry. The dish includes foods like tomato sorbet, olive oil and mozerrella which are very light as well, says Priya Bala, editor of Bangalore Times.

BOMRAS

Goa

This small restaurant in Candolim serves the best Sesame crusted tuna sashimi, says former model and chef Dino Martelli. They use a light soya sauce and serve it with ginger no oils and if you're iffy about eating it raw, you can ask for it to be steamed or poached!

SOAM

Mumbai

Mumbai-based nutritionist Dr Anjali Mukherjee swears by Soam. It has a separate low cal menu to choose from, says Dr Mukherjee, and recommends Ragi Chila (a finger millet dish).

GRASSHOPPER

Bangalore

Every meal here is made from scratch. The owner has opened this place in the backyard of her house. They specialise in organic foods and grow the produce themselves! The baked figs with honey are sweetened naturally and absolutely divine, says Mumbai-based nutritionist Dr Naini Setalvad.

ENERGY HOME

Pondicherry

You will find no oil, red chillies or spices here. The beetroot halwa with gulkand and honey, which is always too oily, has no oil and no sugar, says Nandkumaarr Awatramanii, a Mumbaibased restauranteur.
